WEATHERING THE STORM
A tale of resilience, preparedness, and commitment in the face of an impending threat.

The port industry faces an unrelenting adversary in the form of cyclones. Located along coastlines, ports are especially vulnerable to the destructive forces of nature. Historically, a significant number of these cyclones striking the Indian coast originate in the Bay of Bengal, with fewer occurrences on the west coast.
In 1998, Cyclone 03A unleashed its fury upon Gujarat, causing widespread devastation to both property and human life. Now, 25 years later, in June 2023, the Kutch District, home to Mundra Port & SEZ industries, the Tuna terminal, and the Khavda hybrid renewables park, found itself once again bracing for an impending and potentially catastrophic cyclone.
According to forecasts from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ named Biparjoy was on a collision course with the Kutch region. It was expected to bring sustained maximum wind speeds ranging from 125 to 135 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 150 kmph upon landfall.
Recognising the magnitude of the impending disaster, the situation was elevated to a matter of national importance. National and state government agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping), and the Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority (GSDMA), swung into action, initiating preparatory and precautionary measures. The Prime Minister of India and the Chief Minister of Gujarat also personally reviewed the state of preparedness. In our Group, Chairman Gautam Adani and CEO-APSEZ took personal charge of ensuring the safety of people, prioritising this above all else.
Following suit, our teams in Mundra, Tuna and Khavda sprang into action. All cyclone-related Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) were activated. Operations and project works were temporarily suspended, and the port and renewables park were evacuated. Our teams worked tirelessly to secure the cargo of our customers, safeguard our infrastructure, and protect our assets. Additionally, onsite teams closely coordinated with the local community to provide immediate assistance in case of any distress.
For the very first time, an Emergency Control Room was established at the Global Security Operations Centre (GSOC) at Adani Corporate House, Ahmedabad. An emergency response team, composed of officers from ports, logistics, and security, was deployed around the clock during the cyclone period. The team remained vigilant, monitoring the cyclone’s path and collaborating with the Emergency Control Room of the Government of Gujarat, as well as other agencies such as the IMD, NDRF and GSDMA. Regular updates were provided to all our business partners. Our senior management also received situation reports every six hours.
On 15 June 2023, Cyclone Biparjoy finally made landfall at Koteshwar (Narayansarovar) in the evening hours. Thanks to the diligence, dedication, and enthusiasm exhibited by our onsite teams and headquarters, there were zero casualties or injuries, and damage to infrastructure and vessels was kept to a minimum.
Our entire team demonstrated extraordinary collaboration, coordination, and adaptability, greatly aiding in handling preparedness and subsequent restoration and recovery work in the cyclone’s aftermath, causing minimal disruption to trade.
The port focused on restoring its operations with the utmost efficiency. By 17 June 2023, operations had resumed at Mundra Port, swiftly returning to its pre-Biparjoy performance levels, instilling confidence in the trading community.
The team’s collective efforts garnered widespread appreciation from our Chairman. Today, our operations stand streamlined, and we extend our heartfelt congratulations to the teams whose dedication and resilience made this remarkable feat possible and kept everyone and everything safe.

Bowen Rail Company’s Family Day celebrates milestones and community with their loved ones.
family day
Andrew Strutton
In the heart of Australia’s picturesque north Queensland, the Bowen Rail Company (BRC), a subsidiary of the Adani Group, hosted a heartwarming event that highlighted the importance of family, community, and innovation. BRC’s Provisioning Yard, nestled north of Bowen, served as the perfect backdrop for a special ‘Friends and Family Day’. This event offered an exclusive glimpse into the inner workings of BRC, where loved ones of the dedicated team members could see first-hand what it takes to transport high-quality coal from the Carmichael mine to the North Queensland Export Terminal.
The concept of the Family Day is more than just a casual gathering; it symbolises the vital support system behind the BRC team’s remarkable achievements in the Australian rail industry. These hardworking individuals, who play a pivotal role in enabling Australia’s coal exports to reach destinations worldwide, were thrilled to share their professional world with those who mean the most to them.
The Bowen Rail Company operates as a vital link in the global energy supply chain. Its primary mission is to transport high-quality coal from the Carmichael mine to the North Queensland Export Terminal, where it embarks on a global journey. Carmichael coal serves a dual purpose, playing a significant role in addressing two pressing global challenges: energy poverty and environmental sustainability.
The Bowen Rail Company’s Friends and Family Day was not just an opportunity to celebrate these remarkable achievements but also a testament to the sense of community and support that fuels their continued success. As BRC continues to play a pivotal role in the global energy landscape, it remains committed to innovation, sustainability, and its unwavering support for the community that stands by its side.
Setting Sail For Sustainability
Adani Shipping’s eco-focused approach to drydocking and beyond navigates
challenges with environmental vigilance.

Adani Shipping’s capesize bulk carrier ship, Urja, underwent a transformative journey at the Cosco Shipyard in Shanghai, China, from 24 July to 9 August this year. This second special survey and docking endeavour stood as a testament to the company's commitment to both operational excellence and environmental responsibility.
For many, the intricacies of drydocking remain a mystery, but this pivotal operation holds immense significance for ship owners and managers. Drydocking involves the careful removal of a vessel from water, under the supervision of specialised professionals, regulatory bodies, and marine engineers. This meticulous process allows for inspection, repair, and cleansing, particularly of the submerged sections, augmenting a ship's efficiency and ensuring a safer and prolonged operational lifespan. Moreover, this period presents an opportunity for comprehensive maintenance, safeguarding smooth operation until the next docking cycle.
Adani Shipping’s recent achievement is remarkable not just for its efficiency, but for its environmentally conscious approach. Despite battling typhoon challenges and disruptive weather, the team triumphantly completed the project within a mere 18 days.
Ever since its inception, Adani Shipping has demonstrated a resolute commitment to environmental preservation. The company takes substantial measures to advance energy efficiency and reduce emissions, making strides in eco-friendly practices. By retrofitting Energy Saving Devices onto their vessels, they contribute to a greener maritime industry.
Navigating the heavily regulated waters of the shipping industry, Adani Shipping prioritises energy efficiency and decarbonisation, aligning with IMO (International Maritime Organisation) guidelines and industry standards. The company incorporates Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles at its core, ensuring each project contributes to the group's net-zero targets. Adhering to compliance regulations like BWMC, SEEMP III, and CII, Adani Shipping places operational practices and performance indicators at the forefront.
The company's commitment to reducing environmental impact goes beyond drydocking. Initiatives such as slow steaming and route optimisation are embraced to control pollution. Notably, the implementation of shaft generators across the fleet has led to substantial reductions in GHG (greenhouse gas) emissions, as evidenced by the data from the pilot project involving the cape size bulker, Aashna.
Adani Shipping’s dedication to sustainable practices echoes far beyond the waves, setting a course for responsible maritime operations that leave a lasting positive impact on our planet.

Rural Renaissance:
Unlocking Potential
The Adani Foundation’s concerted efforts towards creating sustainable livelihoods in rural India are not only empowering individuals but also steering the nation toward inclusive growth.
Arpita Vadgama
As world's most populous nation with an increasingly youthful demographic, India faces the challenge of harnessing this enormous demographic dividend for the betterment of its people and the nation's growth. With a population of 1.42 billion in 2023, India is also home to the world's largest rural population. To fully realise the potential of this demographic advantage, a concerted effort towards sustainable livelihoods in rural India is essential. These livelihoods not only empower individuals and communities but also foster holistic socio-economic development. By creating stable income streams, they enable investments in education, healthcare, and an improved standard of living, ultimately bolstering consumption power. Additionally, such opportunities can play a pivotal role in mitigating migration trends.
In this context, the Adani Foundation has been spearheading interventions aimed at increasing, diversifying, and sustaining incomes, enhancing women's participation in the workforce, and establishing comprehensive ecosystems that provide education, training, access to capital, and market linkages.
Here are the key initiatives undertaken by the Adani Foundation to achieve these objectives and outlines of the transformative impact they have had on individuals and communities across India.
Promoting Livelihoods Through Self-Help Groups
According to World Bank data, the female workforce participation in India has fallen from 32% in 2005 to 19% in 2021. Their participation in the workforce is paramount for the Indian economy to prosper.
In other words, focusing on sustainable livelihoods and jobs without focusing on women is not a fruitful strategy. At the Adani Foundation, while we enable women in farming-related activities, an equally important strategy is ensuring that women become earning members in the family. For this, we encourage their home-based enterprises and provide the necessary support in terms of access to capital, linkages with government schemes and providing training as per market demands.
Improving Incomes From Agriculture & Animal Husbandry
Skilling & Upskilling for Employment & Entrepreneurship
As per the Economic Survey 2022-23, 65% of India’s population lives in the rural areas, out of which 47% are dependent on agriculture for livelihood. The survey states that, amid rising input costs, lack of irrigation facilities and low productivity, the focus needs to be on diversification to millets, pulses, oilseeds, horticulture, animal husbandry, dairying, and fisheries.
The Adani Foundation’s efforts encompass reducing input cost, training for implementing best practices, increasing productivity and facilitating infrastructure support.
Take for instance the case of 42-year-old Sajna bai Meena, a resident of Amapura village in Baran, Rajasthan. She has 10 bigha (approximately 2.75 acres) of land but had no idea about how to move forward after her husband’s sudden demise in 2018. That was when the Foundation intervened and motivated her to develop an orchard.
According to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Indian labour force is set to grow by over 8 million per annum over the coming decade.
The size and age of a country’s workforce play a huge role in its economic growth, which in India’s case is on our side. The onus is now upon all of us to complement this demographic strength with new-age skills and foster a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Through Adani Saksham, the Adani Foundation is on a mission to skill Indian youth.
Take for example the journey of 40-year-old Lilandari Nishad who contracted polio as a child, and this became a hurdle for her at every stage in life. In a family of 17 members and only one breadwinner, she longed to be able to help. Her will power and passion culminated as she underwent a tailoring course at Adani Skill Development Centre (ASDC). She not only began operating her own stitching unit from home, but also trained 10 girls in Chandli, her village in Chhattisgarh, paying forward what she received. Today, she is earning up to INR 5,000 per month and is self-reliant in the truest sense.
Aligned with the Government’s Skill India Mission, Adani Saksham has provided skill-based training to 1.23 lakh people till date.
With the initial support of 70 fruit saplings, improved variety of vegetable seeds and handholding, her farm flourished. Today, she also rears five cattle animals successfully with the support of the Adani Foundation. The milk is useful for consumption at home and the excess is sold to a Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO) called Hadoti Pragatshil Producer Co Ltd, which is supported by the Adani Foundation. Today, she is earning an average of INR 15,000 per month and providing for her six children – four girls and two boys.
Like Sajna bai Meena, over 53,000 marginal and small farmers, with over 26,000 acres of land under cultivation, are being empowered by the Foundation.
For example, the women of Jamilabath village in Thiruvallur district of Tamil Nadu were weaving entrepreneurial dreams through their eco-friendly products. In 2021, they were trained in designing and making palm leaf products and registered under the name AR Rahman Oringinantha Panai Olai Porutkal Sangam. A total of 30 members were organised into two self-help groups (SHGs) for ease of conducting business and monitoring.
In FY 2022-23, their total annual turnover was INR 3.7 lakh. They recently underwent a 2-month program for upskilling to learn newer designs and techniques.
More than 1,500 such women’s SHGs have generated an income upwards of
INR 40 crore.

AVMA Students
Set Out On A Global Learning Odyssey
NEW HORIZONS
Two AVMA students share their experience that empowered them to engage in STEM and sustainability, develop confidence in communication, become innovators and problem solvers, and enhance their social skills through interactions with a diverse global network.
Poonam Advani
The pursuit of knowledge transcends borders, as demonstrated by Alvina Roy and Gitanshu Chavda, both Class XI students of Adani Vidya Mandir, Ahmedabad (AVMA). These exceptional individuals recently participated in the AFS Global STEM Academies in Brazil and China. These immersive, full-scholarship study abroad programs, designed for proactive global citizens keen on tackling today’s major global challenges, proved to be transformative experiences. Alvina and Gitanshu emerged as two of only three students nationally selected for the 16-week program that melds digital and in-person learning. During this time, they joined peers from over 18 countries to delve into the intricacies of STEM education while honing vital global competencies.
Alvina Roy
Bridging Boundaries in Brazil
A journey of transformation unfolded for Alvina Roy as she embarked on the AFS Global STEM Academies in Brazil. Encouraged and supported by her school, Alvina initially hesitated due to the competitive nature of the program. However, with her school’s unwavering backing, she navigated the application process and emerged victorious. The ensuing 12-week online program connected her with peers from around the globe, fostering friendships and collaboration while delving into global issues and potential solutions. This online phase also demanded the creation of a sustainable development-focused project, leading Alvina to conduct a Mental Health Awareness campaign for her schoolmates. Transitioning to Brazil marked a new chapter filled with anticipation and a touch of nerves, but her parents and teachers provided unswerving encouragement. Alvina embraced the diverse cultural melting pot, forming bonds with peers from 14 countries and engaging in impactful sessions on sustainability, smart cities, and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Immersed in classroom and practical learning, her experience extended to exploring topics like brain stimulation and sustainable agriculture. Alvina’s odyssey left her with cherished memories, countless lessons, and a newfound family in Brazil.
Gitanshu Chavda
China Beckons
For Gitanshu Chavda, selection to the AFS Global STEM Academies in China marked a pivotal moment. Introduced to the program by a teacher, Gitanshu’s journey commenced with an online interview, culminating in his selection for the China Academy. Upon landing in Beijing, China, the awe-inspiring cityscape welcomed him. After the initial homesickness, Gitanshu found his footing, immersing himself in lectures and activities. From exploring historical sites like the Forbidden City and Tsinghua University to embarking on cultural excursions, Gitanshu’s adventure was a tapestry of learning experiences. He was introduced to concepts such as e-commerce, enterprise visits, and workshops on global competence, robotics, and more. Living with a host family in Chengdu while attending Shi Shi Tianfu High School, he delved deeper into Chinese culture and history, gaining insights from visits to landmarks and enterprises. The journey continued with workshops in Ningbo and Shanghai, culminating in a wealth of experiences and friendships that expanded Gitanshu’s horizons.
These remarkable experiences attest to AVMA’s commitment to nurturing global citizens who thrive on challenges, embrace diverse cultures, and contribute positively to the world.
The journey unfolded with a myriad of experiences, yet if I were to encapsulate this transformative voyage in a single word, it would undoubtedly be ‘dreamlike’.”
A highpoint of the trip was our visit to the Great Wall of China—a humbling experience that brought history to life. Subsequent days were filled with workshops that immersed us in the educational and cultural landscapes of diverse countries.”

Currently serving as the Executive Director of the Adani Foundation, he has made significant contributions to the fields of social work and rural development in India during his last five years with the Foundation.
Born in Gujarat and brought up in different parts of the state, Mr Gadhavi now resides in Gandhinagar with his family. He starts every day with an hour dedicated to self-care, including a morning walk, listening to music, and practicing breathing exercises. This routine sets a positive tone for his workday.
Driven by his passion for serving the community, Mr Gadhavi transitioned to the Foundation after a successful career in government service. He finds motivation in the structured approach and the opportunity to make a tangible difference in the lives of marginalised people. He describes his journey with the Adani Foundation as an ‘infinite vision with no limitations’.
As the Adani Foundation moves into its 28th year, Mr Gadhavi shares valuable insights into the Foundation’s mission, achievements, and what makes it stand out among corporate foundations. He also delves into the profound impact of their interventions in communities, his daily routine, and the personal motivations that drive him.
Mr Gadhavi spoke to a-connect about his writing, his work-life and its lessons.
What motivates you to work every day?
My deep-seated interest in serving the community.
After a successful career in government service, I found the structured approach and the many opportunities to make a difference in the lives of marginalised people incredibly motivating.
What makes the Adani Foundation exclusive?
The Adani Foundation is unique compared to other corporate foundations in the way we approach our work. Unlike many foundations that outsource program implementation, we take pride in implementing our initiatives directly. This hands-on approach allows us to be in the thick of things and be really connected with the communities.
How do you prioritise when planning projects?
When planning and executing projects in areas like education, healthcare, sustainable livelihoods, and skill development, our priorities are clear. These areas are at the core of the Adani Foundation’s work. Education holds a prominent position, with a significant increase in the number of schools supported. We also run some special education projects that work in harmony with government programs. Our focus is on the quality of teaching and learning and imbibing values in the future leaders of this nation.
Could you share a success story or an instance where the Adani Foundation’s intervention brought about a notable transformation in a community?
There are many such instances that have warmed my heart. But a recent story that left a profound impact on me is the story of a school in Dahanu, located near Mumbai.
My visit to Dahanu had been for a routine Adani Foundation meeting, where representatives from various sites in Maharashtra had gathered.
During this meeting, the CSR head and the site head suggested that we visit a school. This school was in a dilapidated condition, and they proposed allocating funds to rebuild it.
A few days ago, I was again in Dahanu when the team asked me to visit the same school again. I was intrigued seeing the same school rebuilt beautifully in a span of two years. I vividly remember the happy faces of the dedicated teachers and promising students who were all grateful to the Adani Foundation.
The key takeaway here is that while we might not have allocated vast resources, we tapped into the pulse of the community. We identified what they truly needed. This credit does not belong to us sitting in the head office; it belongs to the field team. These individuals, through their dedication and persuasion, guided us and demonstrated what we should do. Our Foundation’s tradition of actively listening to those working at the grassroots level played a pivotal role in making this happen.
I could go on and on, sharing numerous success stories. However, this one story illustrates why our approach is successful. First, it was a genuine necessity identified by our own team members. Second, it represented the bare minimum requirement for primary education in the village. Third, it enjoyed the enthusiastic support of the local community and leaders. This is how, in fact, I strongly feel that our personnel working at the grassroots level are the true changemakers.

Quick Talk
A decade ago, did you imagine that you would work for any foundation and serve the community, or was this always a part of your plan?
I never entertained the idea of working with a private organisation at any point in my career. I dedicated nearly 35 years to government service, and there was a certain comfort level in that familiar environment as well as a sense of fulfilment. I had limited knowledge of how private organisations operated. However, within the first few months of transitioning, I found myself adapting remarkably well and quickly realised that this was an appropriate place for me to contribute.
My experience with the Adani Foundation is a transformative one. It has altered my perspective entirely, and I have discovered deep fulfilment in the opportunity to serve the community. It feels like the perfect culmination of my career, like the proverbial cherry on top of the cake.
How do you maintain the morale of your teams, especially those working on the ground?
Ensuring the morale of our teams, particularly those working at the grassroots level, is of paramount importance. We accomplish this by actively listening to our field workers, promptly addressing their concerns, and recognising their invaluable contributions. Through structured training programs and regular meetings with our field staff, we foster an open and collaborative environment that serves as a platform for interaction and motivation.
Any career tips for your younger colleagues?
I would advise younger colleagues to adapt to situations and not be averse to challenges. How you perceive and approach life matters more than external circumstances.

The Pride Of A Nation
Relying on confidence, determination and indigenous capabilities, India has forced its way into the elite group of space superpowers.
cover story
Bobby Nair
On 14 July 2023, at over a dozen centres across India, hundreds of scientists, engineers and other employees of ISRO (the Indian Space Research Organisation) sat hunched over their workstations or intently watched large display screens as the countdown progressed. Many of them had spent the past weeks with no more than a handful of hours of sleep each night.
It was a big day.
At the sprawling Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, a coastal island at the southern end of Andhra Pradesh, just over a hundred kilometres north of Chennai, a three-stage rocket waited on the Second Launch Pad, the newer of the spaceport’s two rocket launch facilities. The rocket, called the Launch Vehicle Mark-3 or LVM-3, was slightly taller than a 14-storey building and already prepped for M4, its fourth mission. Within its nose, called the payload fairing, it carried a propulsion module, a lunar lander and a lunar rover, the necessities of India’s most ambitious space exploration adventure yet – the Chandrayaan-3 mission to the Moon.
The mission had a challenging focus: to land on the Moon’s south pole, a region shrouded in mystery and untouched by previous missions.
But why the Moon? What is it about that cratered sphere, which has fascinated humanity for millennia, that makes it the focus of so much scientific endeavour?
The answer lies in the Moon’s untapped potential. It is not just our planet’s satellite. It is an explorer’s delight, a largely unread book, a treasure trove of minerals and a possible steppingstone for missions to Mars and beyond. India, through Chandrayaan-3, wanted to unlock the Moon’s secrets and, in doing so, open a door to the deeper cosmos.
The Moon’s south pole was a deliberate choice of destination. In 2008, India's Chandrayaan-1 mission had not only made the first definitive discovery of water on the Moon but also that hydroxyl molecules on the lunar surface were concentrated at the poles. The Moon's south pole, in particular, is believed to contain water ice, a resource that could be invaluable for future space exploration.
At 2:35 pm, on command from the launch control room, the rocket’s monster engines roared to life. Across ISRO’s centres, cheers of raucous delight rent the air as the LVM3 lifted off, its destination that familiar orb nearly 400,000 kilometres away. After powering its way out of the earth’s atmosphere, the rocket began using our planet’s gravity like a sling to repeatedly head out towards the Moon in an increasingly lengthening oval before returning to fly around the earth again, each time gathering more and more momentum. When it had gathered enough to make its final run, the spacecraft broke free of its elongated orbit and set course for the Moon.
Two days after Independence Day and 34 days after the launch, the propulsion module eased into lunar orbit with planned precision. As it swung around the Moon a hundred kilometres above the surface, the propulsion module separated from the lander, which was carrying the rover. It was time for the lander to commence the most anxiety-ridden phase of the mission – the descent.
The ISRO team had good reason to be anxious. Four years earlier, the previous mission, Chandrayaan-2, had failed just seconds away from success, when the descending lander was hardly 2 kilometres above the Moon’s surface.
Over the next six days, the lander slowly reduced its orbital height to 30 km, from where it began a controlled descent to the surface. The world watched with bated breath. Then, the moment arrived and a collective cheer erupted across the nation. At three minutes past 6 pm on 23 August, the lander touched down on the powdery charcoal-grey lunar soil, making India only the fourth nation to land on the Moon and the first to land on the Moon’s south pole.
On that day, what landed on the Moon was not just a spacecraft but the dreams of a nation. Chandrayaan-3 became a testament to the country’s burgeoning space ambitions and a symbol of its technological prowess.
As soon as the lander was stable, the rover ventured out to explore the inhospitably rugged lunar surface. Equipped with state-of-the-art instruments, the rover is a smart little moving machine, capable of making decisions on its own. As it drills into the lunar soil and sends back data, ISRO’s scientists are gaining insights that could revolutionise our understanding of the Moon. The fact that India has journeyed to the cutting edge of space science and rocket technology at a fraction of the cost of similar endeavours by other nations is a tribute to ISRO’s cost-effective ingenuity.
Chandrayaan-3 is more than a scientific mission. In just a matter of days, it has turned into a cultural phenomenon. The name itself, derived from Sanskrit, means Mooncraft, a nod to India’s rich linguistic heritage and scientific temper. The mission has broken stereotypes, with a significant number of women scientists and India-educated technocrats serving at the mission’s forefront in various leading capacities. The moon shot has captured the imagination of the young and old alike, and will likely go on to be a topic for movies, research papers, documentaries and classroom study.
In an era where geopolitics often overshadows collaborative efforts, Chandrayaan-3 stands as a beacon of international cooperation. It has garnered attention and useful assistance from space agencies around the world and has also set the stage for future collaborations. The data the mission collects will not be hoarded by India but shared generously, as our culture would have us do, to add to humanity’s collective knowledge.
As the hardy rover continues its sojourn on the Moon, back on Earth, the Chandrayaan-3 mission serves as a case study in resilience, innovation, and the sheer audacity to dream big. It is a story that transcends borders and resonates with anyone who has ever looked up at the night sky and wondered, “What is up there?”
As the world moves forward, grappling with earthly challenges, that Indian rover on a distant celestial body is a reminder that the sky is not the limit but just the beginning for our nation. Chandrayaan-3 has proudly etched its name and our nation’s name into the annals of history, not as a mere mission but as a symbol of what can be achieved when a nation and its people dare to reach for the stars.
Congratulations, @isro! You are indeed the pride of the nation. A country's ability to execute space missions reflects her confidence and this is India's time. A historic moment for our 1.4 billion citizens as our nation's orbits continue to expand. Jai Hind. https://t.co/b7UK1hcN5a

– Bhagavad Gita,
Chapter 2, Verse 47
Since 2018, when we set about constructing the 2x800 MW (Megawatt) Ultra-Super Critical Thermal Power Project (USCTPP) in Jharkhand's Godda district, this verse was the inspiration that kept us moving ahead – undeterred and unshaken by the circumstances. Our focus remained on the successful completion of India’s first 100% transnational power project and one of the most environment friendly and zero discharge thermal power plants in India and Southeast Asia. The plant started its operations from day one with 100% flue gas desulphurisation (FGD) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR).
Adani Power (Jharkhand) Ltd (APJL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Adani Power Ltd, and the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) entered into a unique model of cross border trade of electricity as an export with the objective of addressing Bangladesh’s power deficit and providing affordable power.
Since the start of my journey with the Adani Group in December 2006, I have undertaken several projects and overcome myriad unforeseen challenges and risks. However, the Godda project was a test of my resilience and also that of my team. A prestigious project for both the Indian and Bangladeshi governments, the progress of the Godda USCTPP and its socio-economic impact were being closely monitored at the highest level. The stakes were too high, with no scope for errors and failures.
The unprecedented challenges and our determination to overcome them shaped the journey of building the Godda USCTPP. We navigated the complexities of integrating diverse technologies, managing multiple stakeholders in the rapidly changing geo-political landscape and maintaining quality standards, even as we ensured project commissioning with no cost overrun. This required meticulous planning, collaboration, and agility. The project execution on the ground commenced in late 2018 and was progressing ahead of schedule until March 2020, when distinct challenges related to COVID-19 started surfacing in India. In fact, since December 2019 itself, we witnessed the pandemic impact due to project’s dependency on critical supplies from China, where the pandemic outbreak was first identified.
The project witnessed three phases of COVID-19 in India, China and Bangladesh, which impacted each country at different periods and varying intensity. This led to severe supply chain disruptions, resource mobilisation and augmentation issues. Further, the geo-politics and sensitivity of the region addded to the challenges, including travel problems for the contractor’s team and Original Equipment Manufacturer expats from China during the peak of construction, testing and commissioning of the project. Our project execution teams adapted to the circumstances and handled all the testing and commissioning remotely via tele-conversations and video conferencing.
The team also encountered several Right of Use (ROU) and Right of Way (ROW) issues during the construction of 96 km water pipeline and the 106 km 400 KV D/C transmission line from the Godda plant up to the India-Bangladesh International Border, passing through remote areas of Jharkhand and West Bengal respectively. The ROU & ROW issues involved navigating unique regulations since this was the first project in India's power and utility sector to acquire a total of 740 acres of land under the Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, and in the Santhal Pargana province where the Santhal Pargana Tenancy (SPT) Act is applicable. The SPT Act does not allow purchase or lease of land. Other issues included legal procedures and negotiations to build challenging infrastructure in remote areas which have fragile ecosystems, and obtaining local community support and trust. Additionally, the team accomplished the construction and commissioning of about 21 track km of dedicated railway siding connecting the plant to the Indian Railway network at nearby Godda station in record time of just 21 months.
The Godda project is a testament to the strengthened India-Bangladesh bilateral trade relations and will contribute towards the economic growth and progress of both the nations.
I firmly believe an integrated approach to logistic planning with regular monitoring and adjustments is critical to the success of any large-scale project. The Godda project involved moving a super-heavy single part, the Generator Stator wieghing 397 MT, which was a unique experience as it was transported by ship, by barge on inland waterways (through the River Ganga) and then by road to the site, saving a crucial 100 days in transportation. Further, the complexities of the project can be gauged by the sheer scale of logistics planning to receive about 20 Over Dimensional Consignments and about 8,200 containers of material at site.
Despite being fraught with challenges and complexities, the project was completed in a record time of 42 months from financial closure. With the commissioning of the second unit of 800 MW on 26 June 2023, the 1,600 MW power plant became fully operational.
Godda is a true embodiment of the ‘can do’ spirit, which is deeply ingrained in our Group’s DNA. The Godda USCTPP has brought immense pride to India and the Group. It reaffirms our grit and resolve to light up lives!
Aligned to the Group’s ‘Growth with Goodness’ vision, several initiatives for the socio-economic development of the region were undertaken to support the educational, medical, healthcare and water accessibility infrastructure of the local communities. The outreach of the ‘Gyanodaya’ educational program, as part of the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative undertaken by the project team, was also acknowledged by the United Nations Development Program, the Government of India, the Government of Jharkhand and NITI Aayog. The community outreach initiatives benefitted ~4.5 lakh students, ~5 lakh individuals who got access to crucial medical and health benefits.
The experience of working on the Godda project reinforced the significance of a competent team, a comprehensive commissioning plan, and a shared vision among all stakeholders. I would underscore team collaboration, determination and untiring support of all stakeholders as the key success factors.
In conclusion, I wish to reiterate the message of our recent brand campaign that aptly reflects our team’s motto: “Mushkilon Ki Nahin Sunte, Hum Karke Dikhate Hai!”

The Adani Group has achieved a significant milestone by implementing a series of strategic measures that have not only enhanced its liquidity position but also fortified its overall financial health. Currently, the conglomerate boasts a robust cash balance of INR 42,115 crore, owing to a set of key actions that have contributed to this transformation. Most notably, the strategic deployment of equity has emerged as a pivotal factor, propelling the total equity to 55.77% of the aggregate assets, marking a substantial ascent from the 40.16% reported at the conclusion of FY19. By the end of FY23, the equity deployment had reached nearly INR 2.36 lakh crore, surpassing the net debt of INR 1.87 lakh crore.
This period of growth has also witnessed a remarkable surge in EBITDA and gross assets over the past four years, registering Compound Annual Growth Rates (CAGRs) of 18.13% and 21.7%, respectively (FY19 to FY23). The June quarter of FY24 recorded an astonishing 42% year-on-year increase in EBITDA, contributing to over 40% of the cumulative FY23 figure. Crucially, this upward trajectory has outpaced the growth of net debt, which has expanded at a CAGR of 14.56%, resulting in improved leverage ratios.
Leverage ratios have experienced a positive shift, with the net debt to run-rate EBITDA for FY23 improving to 2.8x from 3.2x in the previous year. The Gross Assets to Net Debt ratio stood at 2.3x by the end of FY23, while the Net Debt to Equity ratio reached 0.8x. Moreover, the Debt Coverage ratio improved to 2.02x for FY23, up from 1.47x in FY22.
A significant portion of the portfolio’s EBITDA is derived from businesses with ratings equivalent to India’s sovereign rating, adding stability.
The core infrastructure and utility platforms accounted for 83% of the total EBITDA in FY23 and 86% in the June FY24 quarter.
Contractual businesses also contributed significantly, accounting for 82% of the portfolio’s EBITDA in FY23.
Diverse funding strategies have mitigated concentration risk, as finance sourcing spans global and domestic banks, capital markets, and other avenues. This conservative approach has led to a robust maturity cover for debt, reducing refinancing risks. The success of a 10-year equity programme initiated in 2016 stands out, attracting over USD 9.5 billion from global investors since 2019. (This does not include the recent stake sale in Adani Power to GQG Partners.) This program supported strategic priorities and contributed to pre-payment of margin-linked share-backed financing.
Furthermore, the promoter-level entity has generated INR 30,900 crore (this too does not include the recent stake sale in Adani Power to GQG Partners) through secondary market transactions since March 2023, further augmenting its financial prowess.
These achievements underscore the Adani Group’s unwavering commitment to financial strength and stability, firmly positioning it for sustained, accelerated growth across a diverse range of businesses and sectors.

AI’s
Amazing Evolution
There is no doubt that AI is at an inflection point today. Recent advances in AI and related fields — which include ML and DL — are unleashing the full potential of data.

Rajesh Parameswaran
IBM
According to one of the latest studies by the IBM Institute for Business Value which specifically surveyed CEOs, half of the CEOs reported they are already integrating generative AI into products and services. In the same study, 43% said they are using generative AI to inform strategic decisions, and 36% reported using the technology for operational decisions.
The idea of ‘a machine that thinks’ dates back to ancient Greece. While the concept of AI has evolved rapidly in the modern era ever since the advent of electronic computing, advances in AI and related fields — which include machine learning and deep learning — are unleashing the full potential of data. And IBM has been playing a key role in this evolution.
In the span of more than a century, IBM has evolved from a small business that made scales, time clocks and tabulating machines to a globally integrated enterprise with a strong vision for the future. While IBM’s AI journey is filled with milestones such as Watson, Deep Blue and now watsonx, the foundations were laid much before these modern marvels.
Fortran
One of the iconic moments in this journey is Fortran. From its creation in 1954, and its commercial release in 1957 as the progenitor of software, Fortran (FORMula TRANslator) became the first computer language standard that helped open the door to modern computing and may well be the most influential software product in history. Prior to Fortran, computers did not have software. Using the machines involved manually typing commands in binary machine, or assembly, language. For the first time, Fortran made code comprehensible to people with expertise in fields other than computing, opening programming to mathematicians and scientists.
Shoebox
One of the real-world applications of AI systems today is automatic speech recognition (ASR), computer speech recognition, or speech-to-text, and it is a capability which uses natural language processing (NLP) to process human speech into a written format.
In 1962, IBM unveiled the Shoebox — a machine that could do simple math calculations via
voice commands. The Shoebox was demonstrated on television and at the 1962 World’s Fair in
Seattle, Washington. The device recognized 10 digits and six
control worlds —
including “plus,” “minus” and “total”— spoken to it through a microphone.
The effectiveness of speech recognition today comes out of decades of such research & development by hundreds of scientists and engineers working on statistics, linguistics, semantics, predictive algorithms and audio processing.
Deep Blue
Deep Blue was a dedicated chess-playing supercomputer build by IBM Research. In 1997, in a historic match, Deep Blue became the first computer to defeat a reigning world chess champion. The human chess champion had actually won in 1996 against an earlier version of Deep Blue; the 1997 match was billed as a “rematch.” In the six-game match, the chess grandmaster won the first game, Deep Blue took the next one, and the two players drew the three following games. Game 6 ended the match with a crushing defeat of the champion by Deep Blue.
Deep Blue had an impact on computing in many different industries. It was programmed to solve the complex, strategic game of chess, so it enabled researchers to explore and understand the limits of massively parallel processing.
This research gave developers insight into ways they could design a computer to tackle complex problems in other fields, using deep knowledge to analyze a higher number of possible solutions.
The architecture used in Deep Blue was applied to financial modelling, including marketplace trends and risk analysis; data mining—uncovering hidden relationships and patterns in large databases; and molecular dynamics, a valuable tool for helping to discover and develop new drugs.
Watson
In the 2000s, IBM developed the Watson computer to understand the actual meaning behind words, distinguish between relevant and irrelevant content, and ultimately demonstrate confidence to deliver precise final answers. Because of its deeper understanding of language, it could process and answer more complex questions that include puns, irony and riddles common in natural language.
On February 14–16, 2011, it was put to the test, competing in three episodes of the US television quiz show Jeopardy!, against the two most successful players in the show’s history. It won.
To successfully compete on Jeopardy! Watson had to analyze each question to determine exactly what was being asked, analyze the available content to extract precise answers, and quickly compute its level of confidence in the answer based on supporting and refuting the information found. At its core, Watson was built on IBM DeepQA technology for hypothesis generation, massive evidence gathering, analysis and scoring. It was loaded with millions of documents, including dictionaries, encyclopaedias, taxonomies, religious texts, novels, plays and other reference material that it could use to build its knowledge.
The research underlying Watson has elevated computer intelligence and human-to-computer communication to unprecedented levels. IBM has since applied the unique technological capabilities developed for Watson to help clients across a wide variety of industries answer business questions quickly and accurately.
IBM watsonx
IBM watsonx is the new AI and data platform that can enable enterprises to scale and accelerate the impact of the most advanced AI with trusted data.
watsonx comprises three products to help organizations accelerate and scale AI – the watsonx.ai studio for new foundation models, generative AI and machine learning; the watsonx.data fit-for-purpose data store, built on an open lakehouse architecture; and the watsonx.governance toolkit to help enable AI workflows to be built with responsibility, transparency and explainability.
watsonx allows clients and partners to specialise and deploy models for various enterprise use cases or build their own. To date, the platform has been shaped by more than 150 users across industries – from telco to banking – participating in the beta and tech preview programs.
IBM’s direct and indirect contribution to the birth and development of AI go much beyond the above. These include icons such as the IBM Punched Cards, the Floppy Disk, the Personal Computer, DRAM, and many many more.
These milestones that have emerged throughout IBM’s history are complex tales of big risks, lessons learned and discoveries that have transformed the way the entire world works and lives.

Introducing the Notion of a Shifting Global Order
Dr David Passig introduced a compelling concept – the emergence of a new world order marking the transition from the era of globalisation dominated by a unipolar United States. In the wake of shifting paradigms, exemplified by events such as the Russia-Ukraine War, Dr Passig illuminated the emergence of a new geopolitical landscape characterised by clusters of nations with varying globalisation perspectives.
A focal point of Dr Passig's discourse was the pivotal role of maritime routes in contemporary trade and how the geopolitical strategies of nations revolve around gaining control of strategic ‘chokepoints’ along these sea routes. The disruption of these points, he elucidated, could lead to far-reaching repercussions such as heightened inflation, poverty, food scarcity, and energy crises in nations dependent on these routes.
Central to his presentation was China’s ambition to assert dominance in South China sea and Indian Ocean, a goal countered by the United States through a strategy where Israel and India have a part to play. Dr Passig underscored the intricate balance that India seeks to maintain, aligned with its vision of a multipolar world order.
India's distinctive approach involves establishing alternatives to existing chokepoints, exemplified by the proposed India-Iran-Russia corridor as a potential replacement for the Suez Canal. Dr Passig commended this strategy while acknowledging the complex challenges it poses, both economically and strategically, including potential strains on India's relationships with the US, China, and Israel.
Dr Passig further delved into the significance of Israel's Haifa port as a small yet noteworthy step within this broader strategy. He emphasised the likelihood of numerous such opportunities emerging in the future as nations continue to refine their approaches in this evolving global landscape.
In conclusion, Dr Passig asserted that a significant accomplishment of the 21st century would be the elimination of chokepoints on a global scale, envisioning a 22nd century characterised by a remarkable absence of dominant superpowers and the earth carved altogether in a different way.

Researchers use Artificial Intelligence to protect the Black-throated Finch and its habitat.
innovation
Andrew Strutton
Bravus Mining and Resources has partnered with Queensland scientists to use cutting-edge artificial intelligence technology to improve remote monitoring of the Black-throated Finch at the Carmichael mine near Clermont in Australia's central Queensland.
Researchers from E2M created an automated recogniser to capture the birds’ calls, which will support best practice monitoring of the species and open the door for better surveillance of other rare birds.
In a scientific article published in the international journal Ecological Informatics, the researchers detailed the use of machine learning to make major advances in the technology used to analyse bioacoustics data.
Reflecting on this groundbreaking endeavour, Bravus Mining and Resources Chief Operating Officer Mick Crowe shared his insights, underscoring how this stride in research and innovation seamlessly integrates into the company’s steadfast commitment to safeguarding the indigenous finch population.
“We developed a targeted Management Plan to protect local Black-throated Finches and their habitat as part of the strict environment conditions our Carmichael mine operates under,’’ Mr Crowe said.
“Research undertaken over many years now shows those plans are working and the finches are thriving.
“However, our work is also contributing a new understanding of the species and this exciting development to unlock new monitoring technologies will help to improve the management of finch populations more broadly in Queensland.
“Innovations like this help ensure our Management Plan remains world’s best practice and that we continue to mine in a way that is responsible and creates jobs and business opportunities for regional Queenslanders for generations to come.”
E2M Senior ecologist John van Osta said the research was developed in consultation with the Queensland Department of Environment and Science and would support the development of automated recognisers for other rare and difficult-to-survey bird species.
“The publication of this work in a respected scientific journal shows our commitment to scientific rigour and supports research and management of Black-throated Finch throughout their range,’’ he said.
“This research will support best practice monitoring for the species and will provide valuable insights for others working to study and protect this species around Queensland.”
Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence and computer science where computers use data and algorithms to improve the accuracy of their performance, imitating human learning.
The innovation comes only months after world-first research into the Black-throated Finch found populations of the bird are thriving at Bravus Mining and Resources’ Carmichael mine.
To support the management of the finch population, Bravus uses bioacoustics recordings to help track bird movements and to identify individual bird’s home ranges, providing insights into their day-to-day behaviour.
While bird calls can be recorded and later manually analysed, automated recognisers can instantly detect the target bird call and are a more accurate way to detect bird species than even visual surveys.
However, they typically require many examples of bird vocalisations to accurately train. To produce a more accurate automated recogniser for the Black-throated Finch, researchers used over 9,000 hours of audio recordings of the species in the Carmichael mine conservation area. Using machine learning methods more common in medical imaging analysis and natural language processing, the program was taught how to target data to improve the finch model and manage ambiguous bird calls.
The result was an automated recogniser with a library of more than 1,000 Black-throated Finch calls and a model that can successfully identify the birds as well as human experts in the field.
Mastering The Art Of A Skincare Routine
A top dermatologist shares her skin-care routine and explains how to choose what is best for your skin.
expertspeak
Dr Bansri Mahadevia, MD
Have you ever wondered why a skincare routine is so essential? Picture this: just like snakes shed their old skin to reveal fresh, vibrant scales, we too have layers of dead skin cells that need to be shed gradually. These skin cells accumulate over time, leaving our complexion dull and lifeless. A well-crafted skincare routine is your secret to shedding the old and revealing a radiant, glowing you.
So, what does a comprehensive skincare routine involve? It primarily consists of 3 crucial steps:
- Cleansing: The Foundation
- Moisturizing: The Key to Skin Health
- Sunscreen: Your Shield Against Harmful Rays
Although toners were once a popular addition to this routine, today’s cleansers are so effective that toning is often unnecessary. Let us explore these steps further to understand how they can transform your skin.
Cleansing
Cleansing is the cornerstone of any skincare regimen. However, it is important not to overdo it, as excessive washing can disrupt your skin’s pH balance and lead to further damage. Limit cleansing to a maximum of two times a day to prevent clogged pores, dullness, and acne. When choosing a cleanser, consider your skin type, whether it is oily or dry, and pay attention to its consistency. Trial and error may be necessary to find the perfect match for your skin.
Moisturizing
Moisture is the lifeline of your skin’s protective barrier, akin to the cement holding together a brick wall. One of the standout ingredients in modern moisturizers is ceramides. Ensure your moisturizer contains this vital molecule, and you will be on the right track. The consistency of your moisturizer should align with your skin type.
Use this guide:
Protection with Sunscreen
Sunscreen plays a pivotal role in your skincare routine. However, many are unsure about what to look for in a sunscreen. As Indians, we are fortunate to have a built-in natural sunscreen called melanin, which explains our darker complexion compared to westerners and our lower incidence of skin cancer. Consequently, we do not require high SPF levels. SPF 30 to 50 is more than sufficient. When selecting a sunscreen, ensure it provides broad-spectrum protection and look for the UVA protection rating (PA++++), indicated by plus signs. The more plus signs, the better. Remember to reapply sunscreen every three hours for maximum effectiveness.
Picking Your Serums
Serums are the secret sauce that can give you that coveted glow, reduce pigmentation, tackle acne, and soothe redness. The key here lies in the active ingredients. While there is an abundance of options, here are a few favourites to look for in your serums:
Glycolic acid: The go-to ingredient for glow, dead skin removal, and brightening (ideal for normal skin).
Salicylic acid: Effective for reducing pores, blackheads, and acne.
Vitamin C: A versatile antioxidant that can add radiance to your skin.
Hyaluronic acid: Ideal for dry skin in need of hydration.
Retinol: A must-have after 30 for anti-aging (avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding; use at night).
In summary, your basic skincare routine involves cleansing, moisturizing, and sun protection. Additionally, consider incorporating a serum with one of these active ingredients to further enhance your skin’s vitality.
Remember, your journey to glowing, healthy skin is a continuous process of growth and self-care. Keep glowing and keep growing!

When it comes to my own skin, I have a combination skin type that includes both dry and oily areas. As part of my daily skincare routine, I use four specific products. Firstly, I use a face wash designed for oily skin to ensure a thorough and deep cleansing experience. Following that, I apply a lightweight moisturizer infused with ceramides. In the evening, I incorporate a night-time serum containing retinol to address specific skincare needs. To protect my skin from harmful UV rays, I opt for a cream-based sunscreen with broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. This not only shields my skin from sun-induced aging and tanning but also completes my daily skincare regimen.”

Driving For Change
An Adanian drove over 5,000 km to spread awareness on mental health.

Arpita Vadgama
In a remarkable demonstration of unity and commitment to a noble cause, Rajendra Parghi, an Adanian, alongwith 12 other young professionals, embarked on a transformative expedition from Ahmedabad to Leh from 1 to 15 June 2023.
Covering over 5,000 kilometers, this journey was not just a road adventure but also a crucial mission aimed at raising awareness about mental health. The target audience included both the local community and the dedicated defense personnel posted in the demanding terrains of the India-China and Pakistan borders. With support from prominent entities such as Tata Motors, Rotary Club, Monster India Energy and Autobell, the team embarked on this journey to make a genuine impact. Their resilience was tested not only against challenging weather conditions but also against the strains on their mental stamina that surpassed even the strain on their physical endurance.
The expedition's significance went much beyond mere mileage – it was about connecting with hearts and minds. As the team traversed the diverse landscapes of India, they encountered a plethora of challenges. Battling heavy rains and navigating through landslides pushed their driving skills to the limits, demanding equal determination from both their vehicles and them. Coping with sudden snowfall at higher altitudes brought forth a new set of obstacles – yet the team's dedication to their mission remained unwavering.
As the days turned into nights and the landscapes around them changed, the mental and physical challenges escalated. Confronting altitude sickness and coping with low oxygen levels tested their spirits, but their resolve stayed unshaken. They recognised that the driving force behind overcoming these hurdles lay within the mind's strength itself.
“Each curve demands precision and skill.”
“Reflecting on my own experience, navigating narrow, treacherous roads plagued by rain and black ice, hugging the edge of a perilous valley, imprints an indelible memory on anyone who dares to brave such hazardous terrain. This firsthand encounter with danger and adrenaline evokes a mix of fear, awe, and respect for the formidable force of nature. Having tackled such roads, I can attest that this is not solely a test of driving prowess, but a genuine examination of mental resilience. The slightest misstep could yield dire consequences. There is no room for error. Each curve demands precision and skill, and I clutched the steering wheel firmly, endeavouring to control my nerves. Amidst the nerve-wracking journey, the awe-inspiring beauty of the surroundings couldn't escape my notice. It was a humbling lesson, emphasising that sometimes, adopting a slower pace is the wisest course of action for safety.”
The pinnacle of their expedition arrived when they conquered one of the globe's highest motorable roads, the legendary Khardungla Pass, standing tall at an astounding 18,000 feet. This triumph was a victory not only for the team but also for their cause. Moreover, their visit to Thang, the last village in India, which was once situated in Pakistan on the Siachen border, served as a profound reminder of the importance of unity and empathy. As they ventured deeper into the mountains, temperatures plummeted to as low as - 2o Celsius. The team's unity, determination, and the warmth of their cause propelled them forward despite the biting cold.
While journeying through eight states and union territories, the convoy marvelled at India's diverse landscapes, cultures, and traditions. From the vibrant plains to the majestic mountains, this road trip metamorphosed into an exploration of the nation's authentic essence.
Rajendra Parghi's voyage from Ahmedabad to Leh, accompanied by his team of passionate young professionals, transcended the boundaries of a mere physical expedition. It symbolised a profound odyssey towards mental well-being, unity, and a cause that left an indelible impact on countless lives. This extraordinary expedition imprinted lasting memories of conquering challenges, garnering invaluable experiences, and nurturing hope for a mentally healthier community and India’s defenders standing guard in the arduous terrains of the India-China and Pakistan borders.
Enduring extended periods at high altitudes necessitates a resilience that transcends physical strength alone. The defence personnel stationed in these remote and challenging terrains confront a unique array of challenges that test their mental fortitude. From isolation and extreme weather conditions to the constant vigilance demanded by their duties, their mental well-being faces the ultimate trial. Being situated at high altitudes often translates to prolonged separation from family and loved ones, intensifying the sense of isolation. Managing to uphold a robust mental state becomes imperative to cope with the emotional toll of separation. Despite these daunting challenges, the defence personnel stationed in high-altitude regions exhibit remarkable mental resilience. Their unyielding dedication, unwavering commitment, and steadfast determination to serve their nation stand as a testament to the extraordinary power of the human mind.

Meet Arpan Som, a talented artist whose journey with the Adani Group began in 2022 after securing a campus placement from XLRI Jamshedpur. Mr Som’s artistic journey commenced long before his corporate endeavours. Even before he could speak fluently, he found solace in sketching with pencils, leaving his early artistic imprints on paper. His childhood memories are intertwined with sketching cartoon characters while glued to the TV screen.
As a young child of 3 to 4, Arpan's fascination with the folklore of Durga and Kali, narrated by his Grandmaa, took root. The imagery of these powerful goddesses, astride lions and conquering demons, left an indelible mark on him. This fascination soon evolved into a deep admiration for art, further fuelled by his visits to artisans' studios with his father to witness the creation of intricate clay idols and ornaments for Durga Puja. These experiences ignited his creativity, and he captured his observations in a dedicated drawing book.
This marked the inception of Arpan's exploration into Indian traditions, history, and spiritual narratives through the medium of art.
For Arpan, art is a potent channel of expression. Revering ancient scriptures, he revitalises timeless tales of empowerment, inclusivity, love, and righteousness by retelling them through his unique artistic lens. His dedication to preserving and reinterpreting cultural narratives through his artistic creations is inspiring and thought-provoking.
Param Sakha: God, The Ultimate Friend
Is God our ‘Prabhu’ (Master) or our ‘Sakha’ (Friend)? – this is a never-ending debate. However, it can be resolved through some instances of the eternal bond of true friendship between God and humans, between Krishna and His devotees.
Four such major dimensions of friendship signify the upliftment of the ‘jeevatma’, to the level of the ‘paramatma’, eventually making him/her ‘one with the creator’.
Devi: The Unusual Forms Of The Goddess
-
She’s not a beggar. She works at that roadside dhaba and is the only earning member in her family since her husband had to stop pulling rickshaw after an accident. She was also in a hurry, as the dhaba-owner promised her to give Puja bonus today, with which she has planned to buy a new dress for her baby girl.
- She is not coming to loot any money. She is a teacher who educates the kids living in the red-light areas. When she was a child, she was abandoned by her family and had to sell her body for money. But now she has vowed to help the unfortunate kids there, to build a better future for them and to make a better way to live. She was coming to collect signatures for some social awareness campaigns.
- She is not any poor, victimised girl. Yes, she was badly burned in a car accident, a few years back. It took a lot of surgeries and grafts to repair the damage. But she chose to not hide those scars but live a normal, strong and independent life, rather than living a miserable one.
- She doesn’t have a family. She was widowed at a very young age and went to Vrindavan. Later, she came back to the city only to join as an attendant in an orphanage. Since then, the kids who never got love from their own mothers have become her whole world.
-
She is not a closed-minded woman just because she wears hijab and abaya. When her ‘upper caste’ friend ran away from home to marry a ‘lower caste’ boy, she gave them shelter. Then on, she considers them her own family, and buys new clothes for them and their children, every year before Durga Puja.
LOVE
Radha - Vrindavan
Their bonding teaches us that, along with love, it is necessary to have a sense of companionship, which can give us patience, power to sacrifice, and strength to support our love.
UPLIFTMENT
Sudama - Dwaraka
Their story tells us how the Lord silently watches our suffering for years. But ultimately, even an apparently meaningless yet selfless offering to Him, as a friend, can pay wonderful and incomparable rewards, far beyond our imagination.
PROTECTION
Draupadi - Hastinapur
Krishna and Draupadi symbolise this spirit of unconditional man-woman friendship, a friendship of equals. They showcased to the world that a man and a woman can care about each other intensely and support each other unconditionally. They bonded well because of the richness and depth that friendship can possess.
GUIDANCE
Arjun – Kurukshetra
They teach us that whenever confusion and helplessness restrict our paths, God himself takes control of the chariot of our life and offers us the ultimate spiritual truth.
As a friend, He removes all our obstacles with His mighty ‘sudarshan chakra’ and also overcomes our inner ‘kaliya’, the snake with its numerous hoods, symbolising the numerous desires we have.
In the Bhagavad Gita, the Lord himself tells that ‘sakha-bhaav’, i.e., devotion through the E\emotion of friendship, is the ultimate path to find God. In this perpetual and constant ‘yatra’ (journey) of the ‘rath’ (chariot) of our life, God is the only refuge, the one true friend, our ‘Param Sakha’.
A single entity embodying ferocity as well as compassion, they are all Durga. Durga is not a figure. Durga is a Concept. Durga is Power. Irrespective of looks, gender, status, age and religion, Durga can be anybody and anybody can be Durga.
Yaa Devi Sarva-Bhutessu Vishnumaayeti Shabditaa | Namas-Tasyai Namas-Tasyai Namas-Tasyai Namo Namah

Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL) celebrated a heartwarming event titled ‘ATGL Together: Adding Purpose to Life’ as a key part of their ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiative. The event was graced by the presence of Pranav Adani and Namrata Adani, who joined the entire ATGL family in embracing the spirit of giving back to the community.
The day was enriched by the incredible talents and spirit of three noteworthy NGOs: the Blind People’s Association (India), Navjeevan Charitable Trust, and People’s Welfare Society. These organisations not only brought their unique performances to the event but also set up stalls featuring handmade crafts and artifacts crafted by specially-abled individuals. Their presence filled the day with positivity and a sense of purpose.
The Blind People’s Association organised a touching blindfolding activity that encouraged attendees to experience the world from a different perspective, fostering empathy and understanding.
Adding to the day’s significance, young students from three schools, who had actively participated in the Greenmosphere initiative, were invited to share their energy-saving ideas and recount their experiences from working on this impactful project. It was a day marked by unity, compassion, and the tangible impact of collective efforts.
As India celebrated the monumental success of Chandrayaan-3, children from schools under Project Utthan enthusiastically joined in the celebrations. With India achieving the historic feat of becoming the fourth country to successfully land on the moon and the very first to touch down on the lunar south pole, the students’ natural curiosity and excitement were channelled into collaborative group projects and tailored lessons. These educational initiatives aimed to provide them with a deeper understanding of this remarkable achievement and to inspire them to reach for the stars themselves.
On this Raksha Bandhan, the Adani Foundation extended its heartfelt appreciation to the valiant guardians of India’s borders. In a poignant display of the sacred bond shared between siblings, the Foundation orchestrated a moving tribute in honour of the brave BSF soldiers. At the Jakhau border in Bhuj, Gujarat, 52 girls from Government schools under Project Utthan tied sacred rakhis to these courageous defenders.
This heartwarming gesture encapsulates the essence of the festival perfectly — an unwavering promise of protection and a profound expression of gratitude. Through this remarkable initiative, these young girls seized the opportunity to express their deep appreciation for the unwavering dedication of the jawans who safeguard our beloved nation.
The latest initiative of Adani Total Gas Ltd (ATGL), the ‘Guest Session Series’, designed to foster a dynamic learning environment within the team, offered them the chance to engage with and learn from brilliant and innovative minds across the nation. ATGL inaugurated this series with an enthralling session led by Arjit Soni, Founder & CEO of MYBYK, who graciously shared his inspiring journey to success. His narrative underscored the importance of determination and passion, serving as a source of motivation for the employees. This series presents a unique opportunity for the team to glean insights from accomplished individuals, enhancing their skill sets and broadening their perspectives.

Tidal Locking
The Moon is tidally locked to the Earth, meaning the same side of the Moon always faces the Earth. This is why we only see one ‘face’ of the Moon from our perspective. Although we cannot see the back side of the Moon from Earth, space agencies like ISRO and NASA have seen it using spacecraft.
Mooncakes
Very different from moonquakes, they are a traditional Chinese pastry commonly consumed during the Mid-Autumn Festival, which is a celebration of the full moon. Mooncakes are typically round or rectangular in shape and consist of a thin, tender crust enveloping a sweet and dense filling.
The First Artificial Satellite
Sputnik 1 was the first artificial satellite launched into space. This event took place on 4 October 1957, marking the start of the space age and the US - USSR space race.
Moonquakes
Similar to earthquakes on Earth, the Moon experiences moonquakes. While the Moon does not have volcanoes or tectonic plates that scrape against each other, it does have faults and some seismic activity induced by the cooling and contracting of its interior. Moonquakes can last for up to 10 minutes and can be quite strong.
The Moon is Drifting Away
Scientific measurements have revealed that the Moon is gradually moving away from the Earth. Using laser ranging, scientists have discovered that the Moon is receding from us at a rate of about 3.8 centimetres per year. This phenomenon is due to the gravitational interaction between the Earth and the Moon.
The Moon is the Second Densest Satellite
Among all known natural satellites in our Solar System, the Moon ranks second in terms of density. The densest is Jupiter’s satellite Io. The Moon is also the fifth-largest natural satellite in the Solar System, and the largest among planetary satellites relative to the size of the planet that it orbits.
The World’s Quietest Room
The quietest place on Earth is an anechoic chamber at Microsoft Corporation's headquarters in Redmond, Washington. It holds the Guinness World Record for the lowest noise level, measured in negative decibels.
