Adani Natural Resources

In a dynamic and resource-hungry world, India's path to a self-sufficient future hinges on innovation and responsible resource management. Shedding light on how Adani Natural Resources is contributing to building a sustainable and resilient India.

Dr Vinay Prakash

I

n the financial year 2023-24, the Natural Resources division underwent a significant transformation by expanding its mining portfolio and diversifying into the metals manufacturing segment. Adani Natural Resources' expansion plans will contribute immensely to India's quest for energy security and self-reliance.

We at Adani Natural Resources have launched an ambitious digitalisation drive to stay ahead of the curve. The initiative includes comprehensive training and development programs to equip all employees with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate the ever-changing Natural Resources landscape. By investing in the future capabilities of our workforce, we are taking a proactive approach towards meeting the challenges of tomorrow.

The enriching opportunities offered while working with Adani Natural Resources have resulted in a vibrant and inclusive team with diverse demographics. The average age of our team decreased from 38 in FY'23 to 37 in FY'24, while the attrition rate also significantly reduced. Gender diversity has also improved, with more women employees taking on leadership roles. In addition, our ongoing and future projects will create thousands of direct and indirect employment opportunities.

Adani Natural Resources upholds sustainable growth as one of its core values. We strive to make a positive impact on society by promoting goodness and contributing to the betterment of communities.”

Metals

Our strategic move to expand into the metals business was marked by the launch of Kutch Copper Ltd at Mundra, which has been the Adani Group's growth engine. We are establishing the largest single-location custom smelter in the world, with a yearly copper refining capacity of one million tonnes. Importantly, this project will have the lowest carbon footprint in its class.

'Adani Metals' is embarking on an exciting journey to consolidate its position in the copper refining industry and expand into aluminium manufacturing. We have already received the necessary approvals for the mining plans for the Ballada and Kutrumali bauxite blocks. We have also received approval to acquire land for the aluminium smelter and refinery.

We have the unique advantage of leveraging the Adani Group's adjacencies in ports (for logistics), petrochemicals (for caustic soda), coal mining, and green energy assets (for energy requirements).

Mining

Our mining division has been expanding its asset portfolio significantly year on year. In the fiscal year of 2024, we successfully bid for six new commercial coal blocks, adding considerable coal reserves. Furthermore, we are currently in the process of acquiring another iron ore block for the MDO Contract. The performance of our mining operations is setting new benchmarks and augmenting the output. Suliyari became the first mine in the private sector in India to achieve a peak rated capacity of five million tonnes in the second year of operation. Our coal production volumes increased at Carmichael Mine in Australia and Bunyu Mine in Indonesia during the previous fiscal year.

The launch of Mining Technical Consulting Services (MTCS) is a testament to the expertise we have developed in the mining sector. We formed this venture with a vision to be the trusted partner of choice for our clients in the metal and mining industry. MTCS will provide clients innovative solutions with cutting-edge technology to enhance their performance, sustainability, and competitiveness.

During this financial year, we are poised to enter the Beach Sand Minerals segment, which caters to diverse industries such as pigments/coatings/paints, aircraft, ceramics, plastics, magnets, and EVs. Because of their widespread use in industrial, lifestyle products, and consumer goods, demand for beach sand minerals, especially Ilmenite and rutile, is strongly linked to global GDP growth.

Integrated Resource Management

On the past few years, the IRM division has been working to improve its business propositions and expand into new natural resource market segments. It achieved a coal volume of 84.22 MMT in 2023-24, compared to 71 MMT in 2022-23. The e-portal and app for coal trading have been well-received by stakeholders. Technological intervention in the trade has made it easier for retail customers to conduct business and has improved the customer experience.

The bunkering business continued to expand its reach in new geographies and reported volume growth of 5% in the previous fiscal year compared to 2022-23. Our bunkering team has been strengthening its relationships with major shipping lines, oil companies, and international traders to consolidate further its position as the largest private bunker player in the country.

It is heartening to see that our young LPG (liquified petroleum gas) business significantly increased in volume from 11 KT in FY'23 to 70 KT in FY'24. This success can be attributed to our efficient and sustainable sourcing strategy, which has enabled us to expand our customer base to include large and small industries, private LPG bottlers, and Morbi's renowned ceramic industry.

Sustainability & Society

Soon, Adani Natural Resources will set yet another benchmark in sustainable practices with the launch of Asia's first Hydrogen Fuel Cell-Operated Truck for coal transportation. The initial prototype vehicle is ready to be deployed at the GP III Coal Mining Project in Chhattisgarh. This pioneering endeavour of utilising hydrogen as a fuel for commercial fleets will accelerate the adoption of hydrogen technology in the mining and logistics sector and set the stage for other businesses to embrace long-term sustainable solutions.

Our expansion and diversification numbers are not only limited to the business and operations. Adani Natural Resources upholds sustainable growth as one of its core values. We strive to make a positive impact on society by promoting goodness and contributing to the betterment of communities.

The previous fiscal year ended on a high note as seven individuals from the PEKB Block passed the Mining Sirdar Certification Exam. These candidates were trained under our recently launched initiative, Project Pragati, to prepare select mine workers for the exam conducted by the Director General of Mines Safety. One-third of the successful candidates in the national-level mining exam came from the PEKB Block, which is a notable achievement for us.

We are also excited by the early success of coaching initiatives in rural areas for competitive exams such as National Eligibility cum Entrance Test and Joint Entrance Examination. This is in addition to the wide range of Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives undertaken at our project sites spread across five states: Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh Jharkhand, Odisha and Maharashtra.

Highlights of FY'24

  • ANR marked entry into metals space with the launch of Kutch Copper's copper refinery
  • Diversification plans are afoot in bauxite mining and aluminium production
  • Bagged six new commercial coal blocks
  • ANR projects to generate thousands of employment opportunities
  • Launched Mining Technical Consulting Services
  • Plans to deploy Hydrogen Fuel Cell Operated Truck in mine operations
  • Coaching rural talent for competitive and certification exams
  • Strengthening and expanding CSR initiatives

Stay updated with a-connect as we expand in the mining, metals, and related industries, spreading our positive impact far and wide this fiscal year.

A Landmark Year In Australia

Bravus Mining & Resources

Reflecting on the 2023-2024 Indian Financial Year, we celebrate a series of monumental accomplishments across our Australian ventures, operating under the Bravus banner.

Samir Vora

F

rom record cargoes shipped from our port to our solar farm being named one of the nation’s best, the 2023-2024 Indian Financial Year (IFY) was another filled with milestones for Adani’s Australian businesses trading under the Bravus banner.

It was 2010 when the Group entered the Australian market with the vision of developing a thermal coal mine, railway, and port facilities to provide energy to people who need it.

Fourteen years later and Bravus has successfully turned that vision into reality. Today, our Australian operations span export thermal coal, solar energy, port operations, and rail network and rail operations across six distinct companies based in regional areas of the state of Queensland.

These businesses contribute significantly to local, state, and national economies as they generate local employment, foster growth for regional contractors and suppliers, and facilitate the export of Australia's abundant resources to global markets. In total, more than 2,000 men and women work at a Bravus site every day, making us one of biggest private job creators in these communities.

Bravus’ operations also play a critical role in creating the sustainable and affordable global energy mix that enables the transition to a lower carbon future and being able to leverage the Adani Group’s knowledge of energy demand and markets in the Asia Pacific region, as well as the Group’s expertise in infrastructure construction and management, has been central to our success in this space.

IFY24 was the second year of operations at the Carmichael mine, which is an open-cut thermal coal mine and our flagship Australian investment under the Bravus Mining and Resources brand.

I am delighted to say that Carmichael hit a consistent production rate of 10 million tonnes per annum during the fiscal period, and total production achieved more than 50% year-over-year growth. This is an outstanding achievement by the team in such a short space of time, and, importantly, one they accomplished while maintaining Australia’s rigorous safety, environmental, and sustainability standards. We are now in good stead to focus on optimising the mine’s assets to continue to incrementally increase production in line with our approvals.

The coal from Carmichael is transported on rail more than 350 kilometres from the mine to our export terminal north of the town of Bowen by our Bowen Rail Company (BRC) business, which, similarly, has gone from a start-up to a world-class rail freight operator in just three years.

Aligned with the increase in the Carmichael mine’s production, BRC ran 1,643 train services in the reporting period – a 40% increase on IFY23 – and did so at 98% service reliability, which is industry-leading in Australia.

I had the pleasure of attending a lunch with Bowen’s civic leaders in November 2023 to celebrate the first 10 million tonnes of Carmichael coal mined and railed, and it was tremendous to see how warmly our new business and its people had been embraced by this thriving and friendly community.

We of course have a long and deep relationship with the Bowen and greater Whitsunday region. Our multi-user North Queensland Export Terminal, which receives and exports Carmichael’s coal to the world, was Adani’s first commercial venture in Australia and we purchased the Terminal operations and maintenance business, Abbot Point Operations, from Glencore in 2016.

Since then both businesses have worked in lockstep to provide strategic export access to about a dozen major coal production customers in Queensland’s Bowen and Galilee mining basins. IFY24 saw a record 34.7 million tonnes of thermal and metallurgical coal from our customers, including Bravus Mining and Resources, exported through the Terminal.

From record-breaking shipments from our ports to accolades for our solar farm, the year marked yet another chapter of success for Adani's ventures in Australia.”

About 350km south-southwest of Bowen near the central Queensland town of Moranbah our 65MW Rugby Run Solar Farm also continued to shine. Rugby Run uses panels manufactured in Mundra by Adani Solar and is a regular good news story for the Group’s renewables credentials in the Australian market when independent energy researcher Rystad Energy ranks Rugby Run among the nation’s best performing large-scale PV facilities month after month.

Finally, IFY24 was the beginning of our journey towards executing a world-class digital and data strategy that optimises our overarching Australian business strategy and drives greater collaboration, efficiency, performance and return on investment. DigiWave 1 achieved significant traction and provides a solid foundation for us to deliver DigiWave 2 this year.

While I, and every member of our Australian businesses is enormously proud of what we have accomplished together in the last 12 months, what pleases me the most is that each of these commercial successes was achieved while maintaining safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant operations. This discipline and commitment to our people, communities, and environmental stewardship is fundamental to our long-term success and to maximising returns to shareholders.

On that note, I would also like to thank our Chairman, the Adani family, and the other business leaders from the Adani Group for their strong commitment and conviction over the years.

Through Bravus, the Adani Group has invested more than AUSD7 billion in Queensland and Australia, which is more than any other Indian company. It is thanks to this drive and sense of purpose – at times in the face of the most difficult odds - that Bravus’ companies enter IFY25 ready to capitalise on the promise of the vision cast so many years ago.

Adani Foundation

Embarking on a journey fueled by a commitment to sustainable development and community empowerment, the Adani Foundation stands as a beacon of hope, driving transformative change across India.

Vasant Gadhavi

T

here are primarily two approaches that can be adopted to work in the social development sector. The first approach is introducing transformational programmes that are thoughtfully designed for the long term and can change lives for years to come. Take, for example, the life story of Nisha Dahiya, a 22-year-old resident of Bhaiswahi village in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, who could not pursue education beyond schooling. Her determination led her to the Adani Skill Development Centre (ASDC) – she enrolled in the Warehouse Packers course in Kymore. Completing her training in Sept 2023, Nisha secured a position as a warehouse executive at Amazon’s Ahmedabad facility, starting with a salary of INR 13,500 per month. With her newfound stability, she eagerly anticipates renovating her family’s home in Katni, ensuring their comfort and security during the monsoon season.

The second approach is dedicated to filling the gaps by leveraging the existing facilities and resources made available by the Government. Let me share an example. Recently, 9-year-old Samar Pal from Raipur (Chhattisgarh) secured admission in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNV). At JNV, selected students receive free residential education from Class 6 to 12. As part of project Utthan, our team supports meritorious students to prepare for various competitive exams, including JNV – making quality education a reality for deserving students from marginalised communities.

At the Adani Foundation, we consider both approaches to be equally important. For 27 years now, the Foundation has remained deeply committed to making strategic social investments for sustainable outcomes across India, enriching the lives of children, women, youth and marginalised communities. What we have witnessed and learned with each new program and location is that sustainability is best achieved with initiatives that promote people-led transformation. Let me illustrate this further with some key tools and outcomes achieved in FY 2023-24.

Empowering Communities

Building institutions of people, such as schools, skill-development centres, self-help groups and farmer producer companies, catalysing socio-economic transformation at the grassroots level.

The Adani Foundation imparted high-quality, value-based education to 1.5 lakh students through 35 schools. One of these schools, i.e., ACC Higher Secondary School in Kymore (Madhya Pradesh) completed 100 years of service and celebrated the countless luminaries that it has produced for the nation.

Adani Skill Development Centre reached a significant milestone with the addition of Bihar and Assam to its operational footprint, extending our presence in 15 States across the nation, taking the total number of centres to 40+.

Our dairy development project in Tirora block of Gondia district in Maharashtra is facilitating supply chain management and marketing for 2,000 farmers. 45 Milk Collection Centers, managed by 135 women, are supplying milk to the Panchmahal District Co-operative Milk Producer’s Union Ltd., Godhra (Gujarat) under the brand Anuradha Dairy. In FY 2023-24, the dairy collected an average of 2.19 lakh litres per month, which translates into an average monthly payment of INR 1.02 crore, directly into the farmers’ bank accounts.

Fostering Collaborative Solutions

Entering and maintaining purposeful partnerships with Government agencies and civil society organisations.

To strengthen our schools, we must strengthen our educators. In this direction, our collaboration with National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore, facilitated by the Temasek Trust, completed three of its six phases. 42 teachers from our schools are honing their leadership skills in STEM education.

NABFOUNDATION (a wholly owned subsidiary of NABARD) and Adani Foundation came together to co-create and to implement high impact social development projects across India.

Ahead of International Day of People with Disabilities (3 Dec), the Adani Foundation organised a large-scale employment fair by joining forces with Adani Group and 20 other companies located in and around Mundra. The results were heart-warming – 111 people with disabilities secured livelihood opportunities.

Nurturing Community

Readying a cadre of village-level workers/volunteers who contribute towards their community’s well-being.

SuPoshan – our flagship programme to address intergenerational cycle of malnutrition – was implemented across 1,100+ villages by 500+ SuPoshan Sanginis i.e., village level volunteers who are identified and trained to spread awareness, counsel communities, and promote referrals to Government run Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres (NRCs). The Foundation’s Chairperson Dr Priti Adani visited the aspirational district of Narmada (Gujarat) to meet the SuPoshan Sanginis as well as the beneficiaries and their families.

Utthan – a flagship educational programme that is designed to enhance learning outcomes in government schools – has Utthan Sahayaks (supplementary teachers) at its core. Appointed by the Foundation, 170 Sahayaks have covered 254 government schools in FY 2023-24, benefiting 38,000 children from underserved communities in five states.

Enriching Artisan & Farmers

Organising initiatives for upskilling and knowledge sharing for stakeholders.

In the past year, the Foundation introduced Sathwaro – a programme that aims to power art by empowering artisans. It does so by building their capacity, innovating new products using traditional crafts and provide market linkage support.

Hon’ble Governor of Gujarat showed special interest in not only meeting farmers supported by the Adani Foundation at Raj Bhavan in Gandhinagar (Gujarat), but later visited Mundra to share his profound knowledge and experience on this subject with 2000+ farmers. He visited some of the model farms which are directly supervised by our field team in Mundra from day one.

In our pursuit of sustainable development, we believe that true empowerment lies in harnessing the potential of individuals and communities. Through collaborative efforts and people-led initiatives, we can build a future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.”

The journey of the Adani Foundation exemplifies a steadfast commitment to empowering communities and driving sustainable change across India. Through a multifaceted approach that combines long-term transformative programs with strategic partnerships and grassroots initiatives, the Foundation has touched the lives of countless individuals, catalysing socio-economic transformation at the grassroots level. By fostering people-led initiatives, building institutions, and promoting education, skill development and inclusive growth, the Adani Foundation continues to pave the way for a brighter, more equitable future. As we look ahead, our resolve remains unwavering, guided by the belief that sustainable development is not just a goal, but a shared responsibility towards building a better tomorrow for all.

Adani Ports & SEZ

APSEZ’s exponential rise is catalysing India's journey towards economic prosperity.

Ashwani Gupta

P

orts, often described as the lifelines of global trade, have undergone a remarkable journey of evolution over centuries. From humble harbours dotting ancient coastlines to sprawling multimodal hubs bustling with activity, the growth story of Adani Ports is a testament to human ingenuity and the relentless pursuit of connectivity and prosperity.

APSEZ represents a large network of ports with India's largest SEZ at Mundra and is India's largest private port operator with its global presence across 16 strategic locations with latest acquisition being the Gopalpur Port in Odisha.

In the big picture of global trade, container traffic is like a vital string tying together different countries and their businesses. Nowadays, everything from phones to fruits travels across oceans in these containers to reach stores around the world. At our ports, huge cranes lift these containers off ships, working non-stop to keep up with the growing amount of cargo. During the fiscal year 2023-24, APSEZ handled a container volume of 9.71 million TEUs, reflecting a notable 13% surge from the volume managed in the previous fiscal year, 2022-23. But beyond just the numbers, container traffic tells a story of how ports are using modern technologies to keep up with the demand while also being more environmentally friendly. It is a tale of how we are constantly finding better ways to keep goods moving smoothly across the globe.

At APSEZ, every ship's arrival marks a moment of anticipation and action. As vessels from around the world glide into our berths, they bring with them the lifeblood of global trade. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the bustling activity at our domestic ports saw an impressive tally of 9,561 vessels handled, substantiating a remarkable surge of nearly 12% compared to the preceding year's count of 8,538 vessels. From towering container ships to sturdy bulk carriers, each arrival symbolises the flow of goods and the connections between nations. Our dedicated teams stand ready to welcome these vessels, ensuring smooth operations and efficient cargo handling. With each ship that docks, we reaffirm our commitment to facilitating commerce, driving economic growth, and serving as a vital link in the global supply chain. At APSEZ, every ship's arrival is not just a moment in time but a testament to our unwavering dedication to excellence in maritime services.

The exponential growth in imports and exports (EXIM) directly fuels Adani's expansion, which in turn becomes a catalyst for the nation's overall economic advancement. As APSEZ experiences a surge in trade activity, driven by increasing volumes of goods flowing through its terminals, the ripple effects extend far beyond its confines. In essence, the symbiotic relationship between EXIM growth and Adani's expansion serves as a cornerstone for the nation's sustainable growth trajectory, solidifying its position as a key player in the global economy.

APSEZ forms a strategic network stretching like a string of pearls, connecting from Mundra Port in the west to Dhamra Port in the east, has been bustling with activity. Ships from all over the world are arriving, bringing with them millions of containers filled with goods for markets near and far. But it is not just containers; there are also bulk carriers bringing coal, iron ore, and other vital materials to fuel industries. Liquid terminals are busy too, unloading oil, crude, edible oils, chemicals, and liquefied natural gas. Behind the scenes, APSEZ has invested in new infrastructure and technology to handle the increasing trade demands. We have got modern terminals with the latest equipment to ensure quick and smooth operations. We are also focusing on being environmentally friendly, with initiatives like using renewable energy and reducing emissions. As the day ends, Adani Ports & SEZ continues to grow, playing a crucial role in India's economy by connecting the nation to the world.

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone , India’s largest ports and logistics company, has handled 420 MMT (+24% Y-o-Y) cargo in FY24 (including international ports), with domestic ports contributing over 408 MMT cargo. While it took 14 years for the company to achieve the first 100 MMT of annual cargo throughput, the second and third 100 MMT throughputs were achieved in 5 years and 3 years respectively. The latest 100 MMT mark was achieved in less than two years, now it has surged to an impressive 400 MMT. This significant increase reflects the port's exceptional growth and capability in managing trade activities. From handling containers to bulk carriers and liquid cargo, APSEZ has seen a substantial rise in all sectors, showcasing its pivotal role in facilitating global commerce.

The growth of APSEZ hinges on amplifying our existing strengths and infusing them with customer-centricity fueled by technology. Our teams at APSEZ are perpetually poised to explore new horizons and are unwaveringly committed to exceeding expectations, always prepared to go the extra mile to raise the bar."

Moreover, APSEZ is venturing beyond traditional port activities to offer integrated logistics solutions that covers the entire supply chain spectrum. This strategic expansion encompasses seamless first mile- last mile services, from Factory to Ports. By integrating wet and dry port operations with trucking services, we aim to streamline cargo movement, enhance connectivity, and provide end-to-end solutions that meet the evolving needs of our customers and stakeholders.

Through these initiatives, APSEZ is committed to unlocking new avenues for dynamic business growth, leveraging innovation, and embracing the challenges of tomorrow's maritime industry with confidence and foresight.

Adani Airport Holdings

Embark on a journey through the skies as we delve into the remarkable achievements and transformative endeavours of Adani Airport Holdings, shaping the future of India's aviation landscape.

Arun Bansal

I

n FY 2023-24, the Indian economy once again displayed its resilience by swiftly ascending to new heights amid the challenges of a volatile global environment. Moderating global inflation levels relieved many sectors, with India delivering remarkable performances across several parameters. The growth story of India inspires many, and at Adani Airports, we are proud to be facilitators of this endeavour.

With India solidifying its increasingly attractive manufacturing hub position, the logistics and infrastructure sectors must elevate accordingly. The Adani Group's consistent efforts in nation building and sustainable value creation align with the demands of a rapidly growing Indian economy. The future holds immense possibilities, and we are excited to discover the accomplishments India is poised to unlock.

In line with our goal to elevate Indian airports to global standards, we are investing substantially in modernising terminals, airside improvements, and developing new terminals. Technology plays a pivotal role as a key enabler, empowering us to enhance operational efficiency and redefine the customer experience.’’

The Indian Aviation Industry

The Indian aviation sector is progressing towards a promising future, benefitting from rising incomes, increased investments, and a growing GDP. The sector has emerged as the third-largest domestic market globally, surpassed by the United States and China.

The commitment of Indian carriers to address the surging domestic and international demand is unparalleled. Air India's historic USD 70 billion deal for 470 Airbus and Boeing planes, IndiGo's ambitious plan to add 500 aircraft, and Akasa's strategy to incorporate 150 aircraft into its fleet stand out globally.

The expansion of fleets on a significant scale necessitates crucial upgrades to the infrastructure requiring strategic investment aiming to quadruple existing capacities by 2030. In addition, these strategic initiatives will strengthen the industry's standing and contribute to the nation's economic growth and enhanced connectivity.

Transforming the Airports of India

In line with our goal to elevate Indian airports to global standards, we are investing substantially in modernising terminals, airside improvements, and developing new terminals. Technology plays a pivotal role as a key enabler, empowering us to enhance operational efficiency and redefine the customer experience. Our Company embraces a collaborative approach to development, as evidenced by the mutually beneficial relationships we have nurtured with various partners and government bodies.

The Adani Group's broad expertise spanning various industries has been instrumental in augmenting our capabilities, fostering synergies, and yielding positive outcomes. Additionally, the Adani Group has extensive experience in infrastructure projects like ports and roads. This wealth of experience has translated into effective planning and execution for airport expansion, transforming these airports into cutting-edge facilities.

Maximising Opportunities

The aviation industry is currently experiencing an unprecedented opportunity. Airlines and airports play a pivotal role in enhancing connectivity within and beyond the nation. According to the Airports Authority of India, the projected passenger volume in India is set to reach 412 million in FY 2025. The surge in disposable income has resulted in a growing inclination towards air travel

To manage the escalating aviation traffic, the Indian Government is actively working to construct additional airports. As of 2023, there were 148 active airports in India, with plans to have 230 operating airports by 2030. This expansion is substantially increasing both domestic and international air traffic, bolstering India's air connectivity. Furthermore, the Government is investing INR 980 billion in airport infrastructure development, as disclosed at one of the industry event.

The future of aviation will undergo substantial transformations driven by technological advancements. Emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, and machine learning (ML), are set to elevate operational efficiency and lower costs.

Milestones of FY 2023-24

The year gone by was marked by several milestones that continue to shape the legacy of Adani Airports. Some of the notable accomplishments during the year were as follows:

  • Implemented DigiYatra services at BOM, AMD, LKO, GAU, and JAI Airports.

Strategic Endeavours

After acquiring existing airports, our commitment to customer centricity has been the driving factor behind delivering value across all facilities. Utilising the Voice of Customer (VoC), we have implemented transformative endeavours and ongoing improvement projects to enhance consumer experiences.

Our ambitions extend beyond domestic boundaries as we actively seek airport opportunities globally. Our pursuit of investment opportunities outside the nation is driven by several compelling reasons like:

  • Revenue Diversification
  • Untapped Markets
  • Knowledge Transfer and Innovation
  • Global Connectivity
  • Brand Enhancement

Furthermore, our City Side Development initiative is gaining momentum, with ongoing plans to develop 114 acres of city-side area in Phase 1. The execution of these projects is currently underway to bring these facilities to fruition.

ESG

Prioritising ESG as an airport operator goes beyond regulatory compliance; it is essential for fostering sustainability, positive community relations, attracting investments, and ensuring long-term success in the dynamic aviation landscape. Given the inherent energy intensity of managing an airport, Adani Airports leverages the Adani Groups’ strength in energy, implementing sustainable practices through renewable energy sources and energy efficient technologies. The business plans to transition to 100% renewable energy by 2026 at six PPP airports.

Concluding Thoughts

We aspire to create value for all our stakeholders — our shareholders, employees, the Government and society at large. Equipped with ambitious goals, we possess a clear roadmap for their achievement. Further, establishing our prominence as a leading airport operator forms the bedrock of our journey. As we navigate this transformative phase for both the economy and the industry, our dedication to be a partner in progress, fostering economic development, connectivity, and sustainable practices. My sincere appreciation goes to our stakeholders for their constant support in making Adani Airports’ vision a reality. Moving forward into a promising future, our aim is to unlock value and empower the nation to reach greater heights collectively.

Adani Cement

The AAA Synergy

As the landscape of the cement industry evolves, Adani Cement stands tall, propelled by the transformative power of AAA collaboration, defining new standards of growth and sustainability.

Ajay Kapur

The financial year 2024 has been nothing short of extraordinary for Adani Cement. It has been a year of exceptional growth, pioneering innovation and a relentless commitment to excellence. I am thrilled to present the remarkable strides that encapsulate the past year.

Accelerating Growth

In the preceding year, we witnessed the charisma of our strong commitment to strategic growth and sustainability. At the core of our success lies our growth blueprint. The strategic acquisition of Sanghi Industries has been not only a milestone but also a catalyst for a new era of collaboration within Adani, Ambuja and ACC – our AAA synergy. This synergy marks a paradigm shift in industry standards, propelling us towards excellence. The acquisition of Asian Concretes and Cements represent a significant stride in enhancing our cement capacity, aligning seamlessly with our ambitious goal of achieving a 140 MTPA capacity. These acquisitions have bolstered Adani’s cement capacity to an impressive 77.4 MTPA, reinforcing our market presence.

Covering every region of the country, we have already initiated capacity expansion projects of 32 MTPA. This expansion outlines our roadmap towards achieving a capacity of 110 MTPA by FY 2025-26, reaffirming our commitment to meet the increasing demands of the market.

Additionally, our synergy with the Adani Group's diverse businesses has endowed us with an enviable edge, setting us on a path of unmatched growth.

Innovation & Digitalisation

To ensure continuous innovation, we have established a state-of-the-art cement and concrete R&D facility. This facility primarily focuses on new product development, enhancing productivity, and reducing energy consumption and environmental impact.

Our modern plants exemplify efficiency by leveraging the highest productivity at the lowest cost, making us one of the most competitive and sustainable cement producers. With more than 85% of our production in blended cements, reinforces our strength in green cement manufacturing. We envision adding around 40 MTPA of new clinker capacity, implying around ten new clinker lines and approximately 35 new grinding units, each designed with an eye on sustainability and efficiency.

We believe in the immense power of digitalisation as a significant multiplier in our cement growth strategy. It has become the driving force behind transforming our entire value chain, from quarry to lorry. By ingraining technology as a fundamental aspect of our culture, we have embarked on a journey that leverages cutting-edge technologies and applications such as Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence, mobile platforms, global positioning systems, and data analytics. These innovative tools enable us to make informed decisions daily, enhancing efficiency and productivity. Our efforts are actively driven towards the pursuit of creating a carbon-neutral and digitally integrated supply chain, as we embark on a mission to revolutionise the industry.

Our resolute focus on cost reduction strategies has been pivotal to our success. Our commitment to sustainable practices is reflected in the significant decrease in power and fuel costs. In FY 2023-24, power and fuel costs decreased significantly. This remarkable achievement is a result of better fuel management and structured initiatives, showcasing our dedication to reducing costs and optimising our operations. Initiatives such as waste heat recovery systems, increased investments in renewable power generation, and securing coal supplies have played a vital role in enhancing self-sufficiency, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and shrinking our carbon footprint.

Sustainable practices lie at the heart of our mission, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to environmental stewardship. We are continuously increasing the share of alternative fuels and green power in our operations. With an investment of over INR 10,000 crore in green power projects, we aim to power 60% of our expanded capacity through the generation of 1 GW of solar and wind power. Furthermore, we will harness the potential of waste heat recovery systems, contributing an additional 376 MW of green power to our operations by FY 2027-28. These initiatives not only drive sustainability but also offer compelling economic advantages.

Aligned to our goal of self-sufficiency, winning bids for coal and limestone mines have played a crucial role. Our coal mines in Dahegaon-Gowari and the existing Gare Palma coal block will cater to 40% of our coal requirements, ensuring a steady and reliable supply. Additionally, we have successfully secured ten new limestone mines with a reserve of 586 million tonnes, further strengthening our operational capabilities.

By ensuring the highest quality products and exceptional service, we aspire to be the preferred choice in the industry. Additionally, the well-being and safety of our employees continue to be a top priority. Through udaaan, our excellence program, we fostered a culture of inclusivity and growth, enabling our workforce to thrive and contribute to our collective success.

Beyond business, our dedication extends to creating societal value for more than 7 million people, contributing to healthcare, education, employment and sustainable livelihoods for communities. Establishing our leadership in water governance, Ambuja Cements is 8 times water positive and 6 times plastic negative by co-processing of plastic waste in cement kiln.

In the preceding year, we witnessed the charisma of our strong commitment to strategic growth and sustainability. At the core of our success lies our growth blueprint.”

Thematic films like Ambuja’s ‘Mazbooti Ki Misaal', championing the rich legacy of ‘Giant strength’ and ACC’s ‘Bharoosa Atoot', highlighting our dedication to both nation-building garnered impressive over 30 million views across platforms. Moreover, we have consistently increased our outdoor visibility through targeted campaigns and collaborations with influencers, which has further increased brand recognition. With a nationwide network of over 1 lakh channel partners and a strong alliance of influencers such as engineers, contractors, and architects, our reach and impact has been consistently growing.

Also, Ambuja Cement and ACC have been ranked as ‘India's Most Trusted & Iconic Cement Brands’by TRA Research & The Economic Times. These recognitions highlight the trust and confidence that our stakeholders place in us.

Way Forward

This year, we witnessed changing scenarios in terms of competition and a shifting market landscape. However, we have embarked on bold business transformation initiative not merely for near-term gains but to ensure the long-term sustainability of our business. Furthering our journey of business excellence, we recently launched – ‘udaaan - Hum Karke Dikhate Hain’. It serves as a clarion call embodying the Adani culture and spirit of transforming possibilities into action. It signifies a flight of the collective strength of our AAA synergy, soaring upwards and forwards, towards complete transformation. Our aim with ‘udaaan – Hum Karke Dikhate Hain’ is to achieve extraordinary results and absolute excellence in all aspects of our cement business. Adani Power

As India surges forward on its path to economic prosperity, the role of energy is paramount. At the forefront of this narrative is Adani Power, a trailblazer in the nation's energy landscape, committed to powering growth responsibly.

SB Khyalia

I

ndia's economy is on a trajectory of rapid expansion, and electricity stands as a cornerstone for sustaining and accelerating this growth. At the forefront of meeting the nation's escalating energy demands is Adani Power Ltd (APL), India's largest private thermal power producer. With a unique blend of competitive advantage and financial prowess, APL is strategically positioned to fuel India's energy needs and propel its economic engine forward.

With an existing capacity of 15,250 MW, APL holds the distinction of being the largest private sector thermal power company in India. Our footprint in the industry accounts for an impressive 18% share of India's private sector coal and lignite-based power generation capacity. But we are not resting on our laurels; APL is set to significantly enhance its capacity in the near future, with plans underway to surpass 21 GW. This expansion will be realised through a combination of organic growth and strategic acquisitions.

A testament to our commitment to innovation and international influence is the recent commissioning of a groundbreaking 1,600 MW ultra supercritical thermal power plant in Jharkhand. This milestone initiative facilitates transnational power supply to Bangladesh, reinforcing India's standing on the global stage. Additionally, we have initiated a 1,600 MW expansion project at our existing plant in Mahan, Madhya Pradesh, as part of our ambitious growth trajectory.

At APL, we are dedicated to deploying cutting-edge technologies and best practices to ensure energy security and sustainably fuel the nation's growth engine. Over 74% of our current and upcoming generation portfolio utilises supercritical and ultra-supercritical units, exemplifying our commitment to advanced and efficient technologies.

The strong performance of APL in FY24 underscores our operational excellence and strategic foresight. Achieving a higher Plant Load Factor (PLF) of 62% by 31 Dec 2023, compared to 52% in the corresponding period of FY23, is a testament to our ability to meet rising power demands efficiently. In FY24, we dispatched 57 billion units of power across India and Bangladesh, further solidifying our role in meeting the region's energy needs.

Financially, APL has demonstrated remarkable growth, with an 18% revenue Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) over a five-year period. Clocking a revenue of INR 46,400 Cr for the nine-month period ending 31 Dec 2023, represents a substantial 44% increase over the corresponding period of the previous year. Our operational excellence, coupled with favourable regulatory outcomes, has resulted in an Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA) of INR 22,743 Cr for the same period, marking a significant 92% increase over the corresponding period of the previous year. Similarly, our Profit After Tax (PAT) surged by an impressive 230% to INR 18,092 Cr till Dec 2023 (all figures unaudited).

Our success is attributed to a range of initiatives aimed at enhancing plant performance and operational efficiency. From flexible operations exercises to robust Root-Cause Analysis (RCA) processes, we are constantly striving for excellence. Well deployed DISHA processes ensured smooth operations as well as turning around newly acquired plants. These are evidenced in the acquired plants such as Udupi, Raipur, Raigarh and Mahan. Furthermore, our focus on digital transformation, evidenced by initiatives such as the Energy Network Operations Centre (ENOC) and the Analytics Center of Excellence (ACoE), underscores our commitment to leveraging technology for sustained growth.

Our vision statement is to be a transformative force in power generation, empowering lives and contributing to the energy security of nations by providing sustainable, affordable and reliable power.”

APL’s CII Business Excellence Assessment score of 592 is the highest among all power companies participating in CII assessments and is the highest score achieved by any company in its very first assessment!

Suit trousers, Smile, Tie, Coat

As a responsible corporate citizen, APL places a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability. With seven out of eight plants certified as 'Single Use Plastic free' by CII, we are actively contributing to mitigating climate change. As a part of Multipronged decarbonization initiatives, APL has achieved a key technological milestone in simulating Mundra Plant boilers for combustion of green ammonia at IHI’s Japan plant. APL’s stations got highest recognitions during the AWMS recognition and Mundra is the only plant across Adani Group to obtain Diamond award in this category. Many of the QC projects of APL across stations received QCFI awards across various regional chapters and in the national convention. Some of the projects were awarded during the international convention as well. Four of APL’s power stations (Kawai, Udupi, Mundra and Raipur) have won ‘Performance Excellence’ Awards in the RBNQA award program, which evaluates companies for their excellence journey. APL Raigarh has achieved highest ever national recognition as ‘Best 5S Organization in India’ from ‘QCFI (Quality Circle Forum of India). Tiroda plant was recognized with 2nd Level Award ‘Shreshth Surksha Puraskar’ and silver trophy in National Safety Award 2023 in Group C of Power generation category by National Safety council. As we forge ahead, guided by our new Vision and Mission statements unveiled in FY24, we are poised to lead the transformation of the power industry in India and beyond.

In conclusion, APL's journey of growth and transformation is characterised by resilience, innovation and unwavering commitment to excellence. As we navigate the evolving landscape of the energy sector, we remain steadfast in our mission to emerge as a global leader, driving sustainable growth and prosperity for all stakeholders.

From the bustling control rooms of coal handling terminals to the heart of innovative technology, he has woven captivating tales of resilience, innovation and empowerment.

In a candid conversation with a-connect, Ashwani Gupta reflects on his life journey—a narrative underscored by resilience, unwavering loyalty and a steadfast dedication to achieving both professional excellence and social responsibility.

Can you please share some insights into your professional journey?

My career journey has been nothing short of an adventure, filled with challenges, growth and memorable experiences. It all began with my first job at Gallium Equipment Pvt Ltd, where I joined as a Graduate Engineer Trainee (GET). Sent to Viramgam near Ahmedabad, I found myself navigating unfamiliar territory, tasked with servicing drag reducer pumps for IOCL. The experience of travelling in trains without reservations, facing narrow lines and even sitting in front of train toilets taught me resilience and courage from the outset.

From there, I moved on to Honda Cars in Noida, where I was the 4th employee. My journey took a significant turn when I was sent to Japan, accompanied by my four-year-old daughter Ayushi, becoming the first expatriate to do so without the support of international schools. Learning Japanese and adapting to life in Japan was a challenge, but one that I embraced wholeheartedly. It was in Japan where my second daughter Megumi was born, the first foreigner to be born in the local hospital.

Returning to India, I continued my career journey by launching new models for Honda and later joining Renault Nissan-Mitsubishi as their first employee in Mumbai. I played a pivotal role in setting up a plant in Chennai before being asked to relocate to Paris. Throughout these transitions, my wife Gayatri, along with my daughters remained my constant companions, accompanying me on every step of the journey.

Reflecting on my career, I consider myself fortunate to have achieved significant milestones as an entrepreneur, a turnaround specialist and a growth driver. These accomplishments were made possible by my ability to engage and empower people, fostering a culture of collaboration and excellence wherever I went.

How would you describe your initial three-month period at APSEZ?

Upon transitioning to APSEZ from an automotive sector background, I found myself captivated by the intricate operations of ports. In my inaugural month, I dedicated significant time to immersing myself in the workings of our ports located in Mundra, Hazira, Dhamra, Vizhinjam, Krishnapattnam, and others. Subsequently, I actively participated in the budgeting process across all ports and directed my efforts towards integrating the trucking business with APSEZ. This initiative is aimed at enhancing customer interactions by providing a centralised point of contact. Engaging with the diverse teams at each port proved to be both enlightening and gratifying.

How do you envision APSEZ five years down the line?

Over the next five years, APSEZ will navigate the evolving global trade landscape with a steadfast commitment to the vision set forth by trailblazing leaders like Gautambhai, Malaybhai and Karanbhai. Upholding the foundational principles established three decades ago by Gautambhai is integral to our continued success. I recognise the significance of remaining true to APSEZ’s DNA, particularly in identifying and addressing the pain points within import-export operations, which served as the catalyst for our inception and growth.

As global trade undergoes transformation amid geopolitical complexities, APSEZ views these challenges as opportunities for innovation and adaptation. Competition serves as a driver for progress, compelling us to evolve and align our strategies with emerging market trends. Central to our approach is an unwavering focus on understanding and meeting the evolving aspirations of our customers. By continuously assessing their needs and offering tailored solutions, we remain agile and responsive, ensuring sustained growth and customer satisfaction. Through leveraging our robust infrastructure, we aim to solidify our position as a leading player in the industry, renowned for our unwavering commitment to excellence in service delivery.

How would you describe your leadership style and what are the key values you believe are crucial for the organisation’s success?

When beginning a new assignment, I prioritise understanding the ‘why’ behind it using the 5W and 1H approach: Why are we taking the challenge? What is the challenge? Where will it occur? Who is involved? When will we start? How will we approach it? Effective engagement hinges on clarity on these questions. I then execute tasks using the 3G & 2M approach: Gemba (Actual Place) Gembutsu (Actual Object) Genjitsu (Actual Situation), Man and Money, a philosophy guiding my problem-solving. I embrace continuous learning, acknowledging my imperfections even in new sectors.

My leadership style centres on people, fostering an inclusive environment where every individual feels valued, respected and empowered. Inclusion, to me, is the bedrock of diversity, extending beyond gender to encompass competencies, geography, demographics and cultures. I believe in the philosophy of E-I-D: Equity leads to Inclusion, leading to Diversity. Inspired by purpose-driven leaders like Gautambhai, I strive to articulate and align actions with the organisation’s overarching vision. Ultimately, my leadership emphasises people, purpose and inclusion, cultivating a diverse team capable of driving meaningful impact.

Now the beauty of Gautambhai’s leadership is, he knows the colour of the flower on the other side of Himalayas, but he never tells, he pushes the team to go and discover the colour of the flower, he makes sure the team is on-track and has all the support it needs. I think this is what is necessary, when you take highly challenging assignments or projects, so that the teams are always motivated and confident on achieving the target. I really want to learn from Gautambhai how he is doing it.

Warm smiles: Ashwani Gupta and his wife, Gayatri.

What motivates and drives you to work passionately every day?

The happiness and satisfaction of our shareholders, stakeholders and family. Seeing them smile and feeling content with my efforts is what drives me to excel in my work.

How do you keep up your team’s morale, and who do you look to for advice?

I prioritise maximising the potential of every individual by respecting their culture and competencies. Seeking advice from the entire leadership team of the Adani Group is a key practice.

How do you define success in your role?

Success in my role is deeply intertwined with self-satisfaction. Rather than defining success as a fixed endpoint, I see it as an ongoing journey characterised by continuous growth and learning. It is about the value created in business, the team and even within my family. Success transcends mere numbers; it is about the impact and happiness derived from the work accomplished.

For me, success extends beyond the professional realm; it encompasses personal fulfillment and contribution to society. Integrity, ethics, teamwork and authenticity are all integral components of success. I believe in work-life integration rather than work-life balance, recognising that work and life are interconnected aspects of existence. Whether at work or at leisure, I strive to embody values that contribute positively to both spheres, fostering a holistic approach to success.

“Inclusion, to me, is the bedrock of diversity, extending beyond gender to encompass competencies, geography, demographics and cultures. I believe in the philosophy of E-I-D: Equity leads to Inclusion, leading to Diversity. Inspired by purpose-driven leaders like Gautambhai, I strive to articulate and align actions with the organisation’s overarching vision.”

Adani Energy Solutions: Powering the future

The arteries of a sustainable future are efficient and reliable power transmission networks. AESL knows this well, building a robust transmission infrastructure that integrates renewable energy sources seamlessly into the national grid. This minimises transmission losses, ensuring clean energy to millions of homes and businesses.

  • AESL is a pioneer in adopting HVDC technology for long-distance power transmission. HVDC offers significant advantages over traditional AC transmission, including lower transmission losses and reduced environmental impact. HVDC lines repquire fewer towers and right-of-way, minimising land use and visual disturbances. Additionally, the technology helps integrate large-scale renewable energy projects located far from load centres into the grid efficiently.
  • The future of a sustainable grid lies in smart technologies. AESL actively integrates smart grid solutions into their transmission network. Smart meters, Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems, and real-time power flow monitoring enable them to optimise grid operations, reduce energy consumption, and improve overall grid stability. This allows better integration of variable renewable energy sources like solar and wind, contributing to a more reliable and sustainable power supply.
  • Transmission line infrastructure requires corridors through diverse landscapes. AESL prioritises responsible management practices. An environmental and social impact assessment is conducted before project commencement. Additionally, they collaborate with local communities to minimise disruption and promote sustainable land management practices.
  • AESL focuses on minimising their own environmental footprint. They implement energy-efficient practices across their operations, including optimising power consumption at substations and utilising energy-saving technologies in the control rooms.

Adani Ports & SEZ: Greener horizons

Ports are often considered environmental hotspots due to factors like air and water pollution, noise generation, and disruption to marine ecosystems. However, Adani Ports & SEZ (APSEZ) is committed to changing this narrative. They have implemented a multi-pronged approach encompassing stringent pollution control measures, innovative green technologies, and a focus on cleaner operations to create a more sustainable maritime ecosystem.

  • APSEZ utilises a comprehensive dust suppression strategy across its terminals. This includes installing high-pressure fog cannons, regularly watering haul roads, stockpiles, and deploying covered conveyor systems for bulk cargo handling. These measures effectively control dust emissions, improving air quality for workers and surrounding communities.
  • The port facilities are equipped with shore power connection systems. Shore power allows moored ships to switch off their auxiliary engines and connect to the grid for electricity, significantly reducing air pollution from shipboard diesel generators. Additionally, the use of cleaner alternative fuels like Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) for port operations and cargo handling equipment is being explored, further reducing emissions.
  • APSEZ prioritises responsible wastewater management. They have invested in state-of-the-art wastewater treatment plants that treat industrial wastewater to stringent regulatory standards before discharge. This minimises the impact on marine ecosystems and protects water quality.
  • Ballast water discharge from ships poses a significant threat to marine biodiversity by introducing invasive species. APSEZ enforces strict compliance with international regulations concerning ballast water management and also offers ballast water treatment facilities at their ports, ensuring responsible practices by visiting vessels.
  • A robust solid waste management programme has been implemented. This includes waste segregation at source, followed by efficient recycling and responsible disposal of non-recyclable waste, thereby minimising landfill use while promoting a circular economy within the port ecosystem.
  • A comprehensive oil spill response plan has been created and regular drills are conducted to ensure a swift and effective response in case of any accidental spills, minimising environmental damage.
  • APSEZ understands the critical role of healthy marine ecosystems for a sustainable port operation. Frequent collaborations with marine biologists and environmental experts are initiated to conduct regular environmental impact assessments and implement measures to minimise disruption to marine life. Additionally, opportunities are explored for habitat restoration projects and marine biodiversity conservation initiatives in the vicinity of the ports.

Adani Power: Redefining thermal power

While transitioning to renewables is crucial, India's current energy needs responsible management of existing power plants. Adani Power acknowledges this and implements a multi-pronged approach to ensure their thermal power plants operate as cleanly and efficiently as possible.

  • APL has invested heavily in installing and maintaining advanced emission control systems, including:
    • Flue Gas Desulfurisation (FGD) Systems that capture Sulphur Oxides (SOx) from flue gas emissions, significantly reducing acid rain and improving air quality.
    • Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) Systems that help control Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions which contribute to smog formation.
    • Electrostatic Precipitators (ESPs) that effectively remove particulate matter (PM) from flue gas, reducing respiratory problems and improving air quality in surrounding areas.
  • APL prioritises optimising plant operations to maximise power generation and minimise environmental impact. This includes regular maintenance programs, boiler efficiency improvements, and the adoption of advanced combustion technologies. Upgrading to supercritical boilers, for example, allows for higher efficiency and lower emissions compared to traditional subcritical boilers. Additionally, APL implements measures like heat rate optimisation and coal quality control to further improve plant performance and reduce fuel consumption.
    • Cooling Tower Optimisation that employs advanced cooling technologies and utilise treated wastewater for cooling purposes whenever feasible, minimising freshwater consumption.
    • Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) Systems that treat wastewater to such an extent that it can be reused or safely disposed of, eliminating the need for discharge and minimising water footprint.
  • As a significant step towards a cleaner future, APL is actively exploring co-firing its thermal power plants with biomass. Biomass, such as agricultural residue or wood pellets, is a renewable fuel source. Co-firing with biomass allows APL to partially substitute coal with a cleaner fuel, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and the overall carbon footprint of their power generation process.

Adani Wilmar: Sustainability across the food chain

Sustainability extends beyond just energy. Adani Wilmar being a leading player in the FMCG sector, recognises the environmental and social impact of its operations throughout the entire supply chain. They have implemented a comprehensive sustainability strategy encompassing responsible sourcing, promoting sustainable agricultural practices amongst their farmers, and minimising waste throughout their production processes.

  • AWL prioritises responsible sourcing of its key ingredients, particularly palm oil. They adhere to stringent certification standards like the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) to ensure their palm oil is sourced from plantations that follow environmentally and socially responsible practices.
    • AWL does not source palm oil from plantations involved in deforestation or destruction of high-conservation-value (HCV) areas.
    • Peatland conversion for palm oil production releases significant greenhouse gasses. AWL sources palm oil from plantations that avoid peatland conversion and actively manage existing peatlands.
  • AWL also focuses on minimising waste generation throughout their production processes. This includes:
    • Optimising resource utilisation in their manufacturing plants, minimising water and energy consumption.
    • implementing waste segregation and recycling programs at their facilities and exploring opportunities to use recycled materials in their packaging, further reducing their environmental footprint.

Adani Gas: A cleaner fuel future

Clean and reliable cooking fuel is essential for millions, but traditional options like firewood and coal often come at a high environmental cost. Adani Gas is committed to providing a cleaner alternative through their focus on Piped Natural Gas (PNG) distribution.

  • PNG burns significantly cleaner than conventional cooking fuels like firewood and coal. This translates to a substantial reduction in harmful emissions like Particulate Matter (PM), Sulfur Oxides (SOx), and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx). By promoting PNG usage, ATGL helps improve air quality in urban and rural areas, leading to better public health outcomes and reduced respiratory illnesses. This also discourages reliance on firewood, thereby promoting forest conservation and protecting biodiversity.

Towards A Healthier Future

health

In commemoration of World Health Day, we delve into the remarkable story of Project SuPoshan and its dedicated advocates, the Sanginis. Their tireless efforts in educating communities about malnutrition's perils, prevention and facilitating access to vital government services underscore a profound commitment to fostering wellbeing at the grassroots level.

Juhi Chakraborty

Arobust and healthy populace is fundamental for a nation's prosperity. Yet, in India's expansive landscape, rural areas grapple with a deficit in awareness and adoption of healthy practices. Enter Project SuPoshan, a beacon of change, steadfastly addressing these disparities for years now. From imparting crucial knowledge on nutrition, breastfeeding, dietary diversity and sanitation to curbing malnutrition's grip across 14 sites spanning 11 states, SuPoshan stands as a testament to grassroots empowerment.

At the heart of SuPoshan's success lies the unwavering dedication of its grassroots warriors – the Sanginis. Through coordinated interventions aligning with various awareness days such as International Mother's Day and World Food Day, these frontline champions drive behavioural change and resource utilisation, aiming to break the cycle of malnutrition.

“The process is same as before; the intervention is being carried out by Sanginis at different levels according to the needs of the areas. There are Days celebrated in coordination with our programme interventions, from International Mother's Day, Menstrual Hygiene Day, World Breastfeeding Week, National Nutrition Month, Global Handwashing Day, World Food Day, Newborn Care Week, World Protein Day, International Women's Day, and Poshan Pakhwada,” shares Vishwa Kalsariya, Project Coordinator – Suposhan Malnutrition Projects.

Work with SAM kids

A major impactful aspect has been the NRC reference. The Nutrition Rehabilitation Center is run by the government in various areas across states and is a unit in a health facility where children with Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) are admitted and managed.

“The kids who are severely under nourished are being referred to by us (Sanginis) for getting administered at these centres. An appetite test is conducted after which a 14-day treatment is given. A child who is SAM is given food and nutritional based treatment. During this period, their weight monitoring is continuously administered. If a kid has some medical issues that would also be treated during this time,” Ms Kalsariya elaborates.

Cooking nutritional recipes

Cooking demonstrations emerge as a potent tool in SuPoshan's arsenal, bridging nutritional knowledge gaps within communities. Sanginis demonstrate recipes which will be nutritional using locally produced and sourced ingredients. They also use (Take Home Ration) THR which is a supplementary ration given by Anganwadi centres to the children, pregnant women, lactating women and adolescent girls. A Sangini demonstrates the cooking recipes in front of beneficiaries and with that she also makes them aware of the ingredients used by her. “For example, if a lady is making a roti then the Sangini will showcase how the roti can be made more nutritious by adding methi to it or moringa leaves to it,” adds Ms Kalsariya.

Successful Exit

This year Project SuPoshan has taken an exit from Narmada site which has been the largest area. “We had 430 Sanginis and out of that 220 belonged to Narmada area. That has created a huge impact. The five-year impact has been good," adds Ms Kalsariya. The prevalence of stunting, wasting and children with underweight was found to be 32%, 26% and 33% respectively among the children aged 0-2 years in the endline. There was a constant decrease in the severity of wasting in all the categories. While wasting was reduced by 19%, 32% in baseline to 26% in endline for 0-2 years. Severe wasting reduced by 29%, 10.5% in the baseline to 7.5 in the endline.

New Projects

In the past one year, Project SuPoshan has been launched in Alwar in the state of Rajasthan as well as Meda Adraj, Gujarat. “The response that we have received so far has been very positive,” shares Ms Kalsariya.

Project SuPoshan exemplifies the transformative power of grassroots initiatives in fostering healthier, more resilient communities. Through collaborative efforts and unwavering commitment, SuPoshan and its Sanginis pave the way for a brighter, nourished tomorrow, one household at a time.

Timeless Classics

Novels that deserve a spot on your bookshelf (and in your heart).

Sania Ahmad

Dusty libraries. The smell of old paper. A worn-out couch in a cozy corner by a large Victorian window where dust dances in the late afternoon sunshine. Classic and as timeless as some enduring novels that have survived the test of time. They offer timeless stories, unforgettable characters, and insights into the human condition that resonate across generations. This World Book and Copyright Day, we celebrate the power of books that link the past with the present. Here’s a quick roundup of some classics that are a must-read at least once in your life.

A Tale of Two Prejudices: Pride and Prejudice Remains a Must-Read

Forget dusty libraries, Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is a timeless dance between two societal prejudices: pride of class and pride of perception. Published in 1813, it is a captivating social commentary wrapped in a love story that feels just as fresh today. Set in genteel Hertfordshire, England, the story revolves around the Bennet family, with five unmarried daughters. Enter the wealthy Mr Bingley and his brooding friend, Mr Darcy to spark a clash of wits and ego. Elizabeth Bennet’s spirited defiance meets Mr Darcy’s aloof pride, fuelled by class prejudice. A series of misunderstandings and societal expectations keep Elizabeth and Darcy at odds, as both grapple with their own flaws.

Pride and Prejudice transcends the romantic realm, offering a sharp social commentary. Austen satirizes the marriage market of the time, where wealth and status dictated romantic choices. Austen's wit and irony illuminate the social pressures women faced, particularly the pressure to conform to societal expectations. But Pride and Prejudice is more than a historical romp. It is a timeless reminder that we all hold prejudices, both conscious and unconscious. The novel compels us to challenge our initial assumptions, to seek genuine connections, and to embrace personal growth. It is a reminder that love, in its truest form, often requires a healthy dose of self-reflection and a willingness to shed the armour of pride.

Reading is encouraged in the military, often compulsory, in that I was lucky. Advantage of reading a book is that one can learn somethings from the other’s experiences without having to go through it. Sometimes a book can change the orientation of a person and leave a mark. A well-stocked library is a valuable asset for generations.”

Big Brother is Watching: Orwell's 1984 is a Chilling Reminder

George Orwell's 1984, published in 1949, is not just a dystopian novel; it is a stark warning about the dangers of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and the erosion of truth. Even decades later, this chilling masterpiece remains a powerful and relevant work of fiction.

The story unfolds in Oceania, a totalitarian superstate perpetually at war with Eurasia and East Asia. The omnipresent Party, led by the enigmatic Big Brother, controls every aspect of life. Winston Smith, the protagonist, works for the Ministry of Truth, rewriting history to fit the Party's narrative. Disillusioned and yearning for freedom, Winston starts a forbidden relationship with Julia and engages in ‘thoughtcrime’, the act of independent thinking. Their rebellion is thwarted by the Thought Police, leading Winston to a brutal re-education process. The novel explores themes of manipulation, censorship, and the terrifying power of a government that controls information and reality itself.

1984 is a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked government power and the erosion of individual freedoms. The concept of Big Brother has become synonymous with mass surveillance and government intrusion into personal lives. While Orwell's portrayal of constant telescreens might seem far-fetched, it resonates in an age of social media tracking and government access to personal data. The novel also explores the concept of ‘newspeak’, a language designed to limit thought and expression. This chilling concept finds parallels in the way language is weaponized today, with terms being redefined and information spun to fit specific agendas.

Despite its bleak outlook, 1984 offers a glimmer of hope. Winston's initial act of rebellion, his yearning for freedom, reminds us of the human spirit's enduring fight for truth and autonomy. It serves as a call to action, urging readers to question authority, value independent thinking, and fight for their right to privacy and freedom of expression.

I am not a television person; light reading is my go-to method to unwind. Some fictions for me are simply unputdownable.. love the adventures of Satyajit Ray’s Feluda, Mma Ramotswe from Botswana, Christie’s M. Poirot and Harry Potter Series continue to be my stress busters.”

Chasing the Green Light: The Great Gatsby Captures Our Imagination

F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, is more than just a story of a lavish summer on Long Island. It's a poignant exploration of the American Dream's dark side, capturing the disillusionment and emptiness that can lurk beneath the glittering surface of wealth and extravagance.

The story unfolds through the eyes of Nick Carraway, a young Midwesterner who arrives in New York to chase his fortune. He becomes entangled in the world of his enigmatic neighbour, Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire who throws extravagant parties. Gatsby, fuelled by a past love affair with Daisy Buchanan, a beautiful socialite has amassed his fortune solely to win her back. However, the weight of the past, societal constraints, and Gatsby's own questionable actions lead to tragedy. The American Dream, symbolised by Gatsby's relentless pursuit of wealth and Daisy, crumbles, leaving behind a sense of disillusionment and loss.

The Great Gatsby serves as a scathing critique of the American Dream. The novel exposes the hollowness of materialism and the destructive nature of clinging to the past. Despite being written nearly a century ago, the novelcontinues to resonate today. Our society still grapples with the allure of wealth and status. Social media cultivates a world of curated perfection, mirroring Gatsby's extravagant parties. The themes of obsession, unattainable desires, and the elusiveness of happiness remain as relevant as ever. As we navigate a world obsessed with image and instant gratification, Fitzgerald's masterpiece compels us to re-evaluate our priorities and strive for a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

Voice from the Hidden Annex: The Diary of Anne Frank Endures

Anne Frank's The Diary of a Young Girl, published posthumously in 1947, is more than a personal diary. It is a poignant and unflinching account of a young girl's resilience in the face of unimaginable horror. Written during her family's two-year hiding from the Nazis in Amsterdam, the diary offers a powerful testament to the human spirit's enduring strength and the importance of hope, even in the darkest of times.

Thirteen-year-old Anne receives a diary for her birthday in 1942, shortly before her family goes into hiding with four others in a secret annex behind her father's business. The diary becomes her confidante, a place where she chronicles the challenges and claustrophobia of their confined existence. She details the daily routines, the constant fear of discovery, and the yearning for a normal life.

The Diary of Anne Frank transcends the realm of a historical document. It is a universal story about the power of hope, the importance of family, and the enduring strength of the human spirit. Anne's voice serves as a powerful reminder of the dangers of intolerance and the importance of fighting for freedom and justice. In a world grappling with rising prejudice and discrimination, Anne's story remains profoundly relevant. Her diary serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of unchecked hatred and a call to action to fight for tolerance and understanding. It compels us to speak out against injustice and defend the rights of all people.

Innocence and Injustice: Why To Kill a Mockingbird Endures

Harper Lee's To Kill a Mockingbird, published in 1960, is more than just a coming-of-age story. It's a powerful indictment of racial prejudice in the American South, narrated through the innocent eyes of a young girl named Scout Finch. This timeless classic explores themes of compassion, courage, and the enduring fight for justice, making it as relevant today as it was when it was first published.

Set in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, during the Great Depression, the story revolves around Scout, her older brother Jem, and their widowed father, Atticus Finch. Atticus, a lawyer, takes on the controversial case of Tom Robinson, a black man falsely accused of assaulting a white woman. As the trial unfolds, Scout and Jem grapple with the racism and prejudice ingrained in their small town.

To Kill a Mockingbird goes beyond the courtroom drama. Racial prejudice, social injustice, and the fight for equality continue to be pressing issues worldwide. The novel serves as a reminder of the importance of speaking out against injustice and the power of compassion in a world often divided by prejudice. Atticus's words, urging Scout to "climb into [people's] skin and walk around in it," resonate deeply. The novel encourages us to challenge our own biases and strive for a more just and equitable society.

The Monster We Made: Why Frankenstein Still Haunts Us

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, published in 1818, is not your typical horror story. It's a chilling exploration of ambition, scientific responsibility, and the nature of good and evil. This gothic masterpiece, born from a competition between friends during a stormy night, continues to be a cornerstone of science fiction and a powerful allegory for the dangers of unchecked ambition.

The story follows Victor Frankenstein, a brilliant but obsessive young scientist. Consumed by a desire to conquer death, he assembles a creature from body parts and brings it to life through a mysterious scientific method. Horrified by his creation's monstrous appearance, Victor abandons it, leaving it to fend for itself in a world that fears and rejects it. The unnamed creature, yearning for connection and acceptance, attempts to educate itself and understand humanity. However, due to its grotesque appearance and Victor's neglect, it is ostracized and driven to violence. The creature seeks revenge on its creator for its suffering, leading to a tragic chain of events.

Frankenstein is more than a story about a monstrous creation. It delves into the ethical dilemmas of scientific progress. Frankenstein serves as a cautionary tale. As scientific advancements continue to blur the lines between fiction and reality, the novel compels us to have open conversations about the ethics of genetic engineering, artificial intelligence, and the potential consequences of unchecked scientific progress. It challenges us to consider the potential consequences of our actions and the importance of empathy and compassion in a world increasingly driven by ambition. Whether it's the creation of sophisticated AI or the manipulation of genetics, Shelley's masterpiece serves as a timeless cautionary tale, urging us to use science for the betterment of humanity, and not its destruction.

This is just the best of the best, of course. The world of literature is vast. Books have been a connecting thread across generations, educating, empowering, entertaining, enlightening. Dive into that treasure trove, make the best of the habit of reading, and find the world and all its mysteries in your hands- in earmarked classics, and well-thumbed novels.

Emphasising on this, Adani University, in collaboration with ISRO’s Space Application Centre (SAC) and Indian Society of Geomatics- Ahmedabad Chapter (ISG-AC) conducted a workshop called the “Role of Industry in Growing Geomatics in India” on 16 Mar 2024. The program had 135 participants including 100 scientists from ISRO, 25 students and 10 faculty members of Adani University. The workshop enabled experts from both industry and academia to brainstorm the crucial role industries and engineers can play in enhancing the field of geomatics in the country.

Notable figures including SAC-Ahmedabad Director Nilesh Desai, SAC/ISRO Deputy Director Nitant Dubey and Adani University’s provost Dr Ravi P Singh shared their insights on opening the way for a thriving future of geomatics in India.

Dr Ravi underscored the partnership's primary objective, a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Adani University and ISRO-SAC, Ahmedabad which would give students a hands-on industry experience. This collaboration seeks to equip the Geomatics sector with a highly skilled workforce, ensuring its readiness to meet industry demands.

The most enthralling aspect of Geomatics is its role in fostering sustainability in the field of infrastructure. Dr Anupam Kumar Singh, principal and professor at Adani Institute of Infrastructure, believes that a collaboration like this is an absolute necessity. “Geomatics is one of the important emerging technologies in civil and infrastructure engineering, our aim is to educate our students on Geomatics Engineering as per the requirements of the industry.” He added that the MoU will open a window of opportunities for the AU students. They will have the privilege of learning from the pioneers of ISRO. The students will also get a chance to work on Adani’s solar energy, natural resources, and gas distribution projects. Where they would be applying their knowledge of resource mapping, data science, Internet of Things (IOT) and surveying. It will make them better decision makers. Integrating this knowledge will also help the projects achieve optimum use of resources while also maintaining the Adani Group ‘s commitment to sustainability.

Remote sensing, mapping, IOT, Geographical Information System (GIS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS), hydrography are the main components of Geomatics. They play a huge role in enhancing sustainability in infrastructure development and management. Remote sensing technologies like satellite imagery and LiDAR have the potential to deliver us with vast amount of data about vegetation, water resources and other areas. It also helps in monitoring changes in environment, both man- made and natural disasters like deforestation, floods, or forest fires.

IoT tools such as sensors and cameras facilitates real-time monitoring. It keeps a track of energy usage, water quality, pollution levels and waste management.

With ISRO experts sharing first-hand knowledge of these cutting-edge technologies, tomorrow's engineers are empowered to navigate environmental challenges, anticipate impacts, and build a sustainable tomorrow.

Dancing Through Time

entertainment

As we are set to celebrate International Dance Day on 29 April, let’s take a look at some of the iconic dance films of all time which we can rewatch.

Juhi Chakraborty

Whether you are a two-left-feet kind of person or someone who can effortlessly move to the rhythm, the magic of dance captured on film is undeniable. From the electrifying moves of John Travolta in 'The Brooklyn Shuffle' to the timeless elegance of Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in 'Dirty Dancing', from the Bollywood charm of Karisma Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit in the iconic 'Dance of Envy' to Kamal Haasan's masterful performance in 'Sagara Sangamam', these films have left an indelible mark on audiences worldwide.

Dirty Dancing

If one gets ready to rate dance movies, Dirty Dancing (1987) would definitely come out on top. With a soundtrack that includes (I've Had) The Time Of My Life, Be My Baby and She's Like The Wind, and of course Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey on screen, you just cannot find romance like that especially the final dance scene anywhere else.

Dil Toh Pagal Hai

This 1997 Yash Chopra musical features Shah Rukh Khan, Madhuri Dixit and Karisma Kapoor in lead roles and follows the love lives of the members of a musical troupe, in which two dancers (Dixit and Kapoor) get entangled in a love triangle with their choreographer (Khan). The soundtrack was composed by Uttam Singh, and the lyrics penned by Anand Bakshi.

Sagara Sangamam

One of the best films to highlight Kamal Haasan, the prolific dancer, who plays Balakrishna, fondly called Balu, a multi-talented dancer, adept at the Indian classical dances of Kuchipudi, Bharatanatyam, Kathak, etc. The 1983 Telugu film’s music by Ilaiyaraaja is much celebrated and compliments the film’s dance theme.

Step Up

Step Up released in 2006 starring Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan does a good job of fusing ballet and hip hop through the interests of its main characters.

ABCD: Anybody Can Dance

This 2013 dance film is truly by, of and for dancers. Directed by choreographer Remo D’Souza, it stars ace choreographers and dances of the country like Prabhu Deva, Ganesh Acharya as well as many dance reality show participants like Lauren Gottlieb, Punit Pathak, Dharmesh Yelande and Salman Yusuff Khan.

Disco Dancer

The 1982 dance film directed by Babbar Subhas stars Mithun Chakraborty and Kim in leading roles and tells the rags-to-riches story of a young street performer from the slums of Bombay. The film is known for its filmi disco Bollywood songs, composed by Bappi Lahiri with popular songs like ‘Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja’, ‘I am a Disco Dancer’, ‘Yaad Aa Raha Hai’.

Black Swan

The 2010 psychological horror film directed by Darren Aronofsky stars Natalie Portman in the lead role in a plot that revolves around a production of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake by the company of New York City Ballet. The actor plays a troubled ballerina and delivers an Oscar winning performance for the film.

Footloose

Ironically, one of the greatest dance movies of all time is about a town where dancing is not allowed. This 1984 film with Kevin Bscon will inspire you to take dance lessons and you will also be singing the songs on the soundtrack for the rest of your life.

Saturday Night Fever

Saturday Night Fever will go down in history as the film which popularised disco all around the world. The 1977 film stars John Travolta as Tony Manero, a young Italian-American man who spends his weekends dancing and drinking at a local discothèque while dealing with social tensions and disillusionment in his working-class ethnic neighborhood in Brooklyn.

As we celebrate the joy of dance on International Dance Day, let these iconic films inspire us to move, groove and embrace the rhythm of life.

On this International Dance Day, dive into the mesmerising world of Indian classical dance and experience the rhythm of tradition.

Sneha T S

The International Dance Council (CID- UNESCO) in 1982 declared 29 Apr as International Dance Day. The council chose this day as it marks the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727-1810) a French dancer and Ballet master and prominent figure in the world of dance. The day aims to promote the art of the dance and raise awareness about the various forms of dance across the globe.

Dance is a universal language; it has the power to transcend boundaries and connect people from all walks of life. In India, dance is not just a hobby or passion. It is a way of life. Indian classical dance forms are known for their discipline and rigid routine. Indian classical dances namely Bharatanatyam, Odissi, Manipuri, Kuchipudi and Kathak are among the toughest dance forms to master in the world. These dance forms are not just physical movements. They are revered for their spiritual, storytelling and expressive elements. One of the differentiating features of Indian classical dance are their elaborate hand gestures (mudras), facial expressions (abhinaya) and rhythmic footwork (tala). The strength of our classical dance form lies in diversity. Each dance form originates from different regions of the country. All of them have different things to offer, highlighting unique styles, costumes, music and themes.

Bharatanatyam: The Elegance Of Symmetry

This classical dance originating from the temples of Tamil Nadu is a sacred art and a cultural treasure. The essence of Bharatanatyam is defined by trinity of Bhava (expression), Raga (music) and Tala (beat). Symmetry plays a vital role in this dance form, both in terms of body alignment and choreography. The movements are mirrored. The rhythmic patterns called adavus are, geometric. The dancer depicts mythological, historical and spiritual stories. In times where cultures blend and evolve, Bharatanatyam is one such artform that adapts and innovates, in terms of storytelling yet – remains rooted to its soul, when it comes to choreography. On Dance Day Bharatanatyam dancers and troupes organise performances in cultural centres, across the globe. The dance practitioners also conduct workshops and masterclass to attract more participants from distinct parts of the world.

Kathak: The Tale Of Swirls

Kathak, a classical dance which has its origin in Northern India is renowned for its intricate footwork, spins and swirls. In this dance form, footwork is not just a technique but a language through which emotions and narratives are conveyed to the audience. A kathak dancer uses various kinds of feet movements – stamps (thukdas), slides (chal), heel-toe taps (tatkars) and spins (chakkars) to deliver a dynamic and captivating performance. Kathak has always taken the centre stage on representing Indian Classical Dances on global platforms.

Odissi: An Imitation Of Sculptures

This dance form gets its name from its birthplace, Odisha. This dance is characterised by the tribhangi posture, where the body is bent from three places: the neck, torso and knees. It also includes Bandha Nritya, that are poses inspired by temple sculptures. Odissi saw a decline during the colonial era, it regained its popularity in mid-20th century. It was recognised as classical dance through the initiatives taken by institutions like Sangeet Natak Academy. Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra played a pivotal role in reconstructing Odissi as a classical dance form. It captured a worldwide attention when it was featured in Michael Jackson’s 1991 hit single ‘Black or White’ from the album, ‘Dangerous’.

Kuchipudi: Of Grace & Tradition

Kuchipudi, a dance form of Andhra Pradesh unlike other classical dances allows the artists to lip-sync and deliver dialogues. This is called Vachika Abhinaya. The dancer often sings or recites dialogues called slokas during the performance. This dance form also features elaborate costumes and makeup. It also emphasises on both Nritta (pure dance movements) and Nritya (expressive dance). It is the only classical dance that along with swifts and turns gives the dancer the freedom to take giant leaps that are visually aesthetic.

Manipuri: A Rhythmic Poetry

Manipuri dance is deeply rooted in spirituality and devotion. It majorly depicts themes from Vaishnavism. The traditional attire of the dancers includes the iconic cylindrical skirt called potloi. This dance strikes a perfect balance between feminine grace, lasya and tandava which displays masculine vigor. The dancer also creates illusionary movements through spins and hypnotic movements, called Jagoi.

Dance is a unique form of expression and exercise; the art must be enjoyed every day. While a World Dance is a great idea and celebration, integrating dance into our everyday lives can bring joy and health benefits. This Dance Day, take a vow to dance your heart out!

Dancing Reflections

Since childhood, I have always found joy in dancing. In 2009, my formal training in Bharatanatyam began under the guidance of Dr Saroj Dhingra in my hometown, Prayagraj. I still remember my first class, excited to embark on a journey that was initially perceived as a hobby. Little did I know the invaluable lessons it would inculcate over the promising seven years. It is a journey that culminated with me earning a Prabhakar degree.

I was an eager learner, fully committed to my dance lessons. I diligently practised at home, perfecting the basic steps called Adavus. As time passed, I earned proficiency in them. Then I delved into the journey of Bharatanatyam, mastering Alarippu, Jatiswaram, Shabdam, Varnam, Padam and Thillana. Alarippu holds a special place in my heart. This particular sequence is performed in the beginning of a Bharatanatyam dance performance. It is a tribute to the divine, a homage to the teacher, and a gesture of gratitude to the audience.

I got a chance to perform classical dance on the stage for the first time in 2009 when I participated in a Bharatanatyam dance drama on ‘Madhushala’ - a poem by renowned poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. It was well received by the audience, with everyone praising our efforts. Following this I ventured into on-stage performances and competitions. I explored array of themes, from mythology and spirituality to environmental and societal issues.

Bharatanatyam requires the dancer to meticulously coordinate hand gestures and foot movements while expressing appropriate bhava (emotion) at the same time.

The navarasas in Bharatanatyam helped me in understanding the intricacy and complexity of human emotions, making me more sensitive and kinder towards others. Again, a basic virtue of life.

Over the years, Bharat Natyam has become an integral part of my personality and overall identity. It is not merely a hobby for me. It is my way to find peace whenever my mind is troubled, to seek happiness and comfort, a means to remain physically active, and most importantly, to connect with the Almighty. It works like meditation for me.

Through this graceful classical dance, I have also learnt the importance of discipline and a way to channelise my emotions through art.

My love affair with Bharat Natyam has only grown stronger and deeper with time. April 29 is not the only day when I want to celebrate ‘Dance Day’. For me, it is any day when I dance with all my heart- whether on stage, at a cultural event or even at home for my own pleasure.

Today, amid hectic work schedule and a challenge to strike a decent work-home balance, dance remains my go-to activity to find calm. Bharat Natyam recharges my soul, and ushers in positivity.

Someone has rightly said, “I didn’t choose to be a dancer. I was born to be a dancer.” I feel my journey echoes the same sentiment.

Embracing Neurodiversity

awareness

World Autism Awareness Day serves as a day to unite in appreciating the diverse perspectives and talents of individuals across the autism spectrum.

Reet Neema

“Many people accuse me of 'not looking autistic.' I have no idea what that means. I know lots of ‘autistics’ and we all look different. We are not some recognizable breed. We are human beings. If we’re not out of the ordinary, it’s because we’re fighting to hide our real selves.” —Dara McAnulty

The United Nations General Assembly, in 2007, declared 2 April as World Autism Awareness Day. This day serves to advocate for the rights of autistic individuals, bringing them on an equal stage with others. Despite this effort, the voices of autistic individuals are still calling for true inclusion.

Autism, a multifactorial neurodevelopmental condition impacts about 18 million people in India. Despite its widespread prevalence, it is overlooked in society. Discussion about autism is almost non-existent, Furthermore the unawareness about Autism has led to its frequent misdiagnosis as intellectual disability. To embrace the “A” in April, we shed light on autism spectrum, celebrating diversity, understanding and acceptance.

Autism Spectrum Disorder is a complex condition that affects communication, social interactions, and the environment of the those affected. This brings with it a series of challenges both for individuals and their families. For autistic individuals everyday tasks can become overwhelming. Simple activities like social gatherings, or grocery shopping may trigger anxiety. Their families wrestle with numerous concerns from accessing appropriate services, to ensuring that they are treated fairly. These challenges eventually lead to stress and a sense of isolation among them.

As a society, we have a shared responsibility to ensure that individuals with autism and their families are supported, included, and valued. It starts with raising awareness and understanding of autism, dispelling myths, and fostering inclusive environments. By making necessary adjustments in education, job opportunities and public spaces, we can ensure that individuals with autism have equal opportunities to participate fully in society. An example of how autism can lead to groundbreaking achievements is the story of Elon Musk, the visionary entrepreneur behind Tesla. Musk has demonstrated the power of neurodiversity in driving progress and shaping the future. His achievements highlight the significance of establishing an inclusive environment where those with autism can actively present their skills and perspectives. Additionally, giving them access to a diverse range of support programme like early interventions, therapy, and mental health resources essential for meeting their different needs.

In conclusion, it is not merely about identifying the challenges, it is about implementing measures to create a compassionate world for everyone. By fostering understanding, empathy, and acceptance, we can break down barriers, build bridges and support them to reach their full potential. Through collective efforts we can ensure that everyone, regardless of neurological differences, is valued, respected, and supported in our society.
