World Environment Day, led by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is celebrated by millions of people to bring attention to our environment. While the world stares at the looming threat of climate change, it becomes imperative to initiate action at all levels. The Adani Foundation is joining hands with the communities and contributing towards the measures being taken worldwide to ensure a better future for the generations to come. This includes developing wastelands through organised plantation, ensuring self-reliance in terms of water resources, and promoting climate resilient farming practices.

Here are a few glimpses of the work being done:

Water Conservation and Management

By collaborating with governmental departments, Gram Panchayats, farmers' groups, and community members, the Foundation facilitates the implementation of highly localised, comprehensive programs, ensuring smooth execution and impactful outcomes. Through construction and revival of ponds, rainwater harvesting and recharge of wells/borewells, the Foundation has increased water storage capacity to 13.78 million cubic metres till date. This is equal to the yearly drinking water requirement of 75.5 lakh people! Water literacy bolstered by sound practices in communities has cultivated good health, good crops as well as immense value, translating well into economic prosperity.

Cultivating good nutrition and self-sufficiency

As part of Project SuPoshan, an initiative of Adani Wilmar, implemented by the Adani Foundation, one of the key activities on ground is the promotion of Poshan Vatika (kitchen garden) to improve nutritional status of people while enhancing food security. SuPoshan Sanginis, i.e., village level volunteers, support the community members to grow seasonal vegetables for regular consumption. In FY 2023-24, more than 5,000 kitchen gardens were developed as part of the project.

When it comes to the availability of healthy veggies, the kitchen gardens of Vizhinjam, Kerala, have been like a revolution. The Adani Foundation initiated the SEVAH (Safe to Eat Vegetables for All) project in 2020, distributing organic input kits and covering rooftops of houses of at least 600 sqft in size. Today, members of 1,260 households are saving INR 2,000 per month – consuming nutritious vegetables and selling excess produce. The organic inputs are supported by the Vegetable and Fruit Promotion Council of Kerala (VFPCK) under the agriculture department.

Promoting Natural Farming

The Adani Foundation promotes natural farming in various parts of the country, enabling small and marginal farmers to boost their income while enhancing crop quality. For instance, in Minjur Block of Thiruvallur district (Tamil Nadu), the Foundation is working with farmers through training sessions, live demos, input material support and monitoring. In FY 2022-23, 300 farmers were facilitated to cultivate organic paddy on one acre land, bringing 300 acres under cultivation. During FY 2023-24, 100 more farmers joined, in collaboration with Organic Certification Department of Government of Tamil Nadu and obtained PGS Organic Certification of Government of India. These farmers are working collectively and further, a market linkage was established between the farmers and Marutham – a women’s Farmer Producer Organization (FPO) for promotion cum sale of the organic produce.

Enhancing Coastal eco-system

Adani Foundation undertook comprehensive efforts to protect and enhance mangrove ecosystems, spanning three phases from 2018 to 2020. Collaborating with the Gujarat Institute of Desert Ecology (GUIDE), the foundation initiated the establishment of a multi-species Mangrove Biodiversity Park at Luni cost in Mundra (Gujarat). Consequently, 13 hectares were dedicated to multi-species mangrove plantations, safeguarding mangroves, and bolstering fisheries diversity. In addition, the foundation accomplished mangrove afforestation by planting 7.42 lakh mangrove saplings across 162 hectares. This was done by providing alternative livelihood opportunities to the fisherfolk community during the off-fishing season. To date, the Foundation has facilitated 56,523 human-days of employment. With a survival rate of 90%, it is estimated that these mangrove forests have helped carbon sequestration of 58162 tonnes of CO2 (carbon dioxide).

Miyawaki Forest Development

The Smriti Van Memorial Park is a unique project to honour the lives lost in the Bhuj earthquake in Gujarat. It is a green belt occupying 406 acres of space of the Bhujia Dungar near Bhuj, alongside a museum, convention centre and ecological park. For the ecological park, many stakeholders came together to develop 24 acres land. The Adani Foundation supported the development of 3-acre land in which 90+ species of trees have been planted using the Miyawaki method. The scope of work includes development of the nursery, soil enrichment, plantation of saplings, mulching, biomass application, water supply, and maintenance.

The Adani Foundation's unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability and community collaboration exemplifies a proactive approach to securing a better future for generations to come. Through initiatives in water conservation, nutrition, natural farming, coastal ecosystem enhancement, and reforestation, the Foundation not only addresses pressing environmental challenges but also empowers local communities. By continuing to implement and expand these impactful programs, the Adani Foundation is paving the way for a greener, more sustainable world. Together with the communities, they are truly greening the future.
