Given that our Group businesses are predominantly in infrastructure, manufacturing and energy domains, mechanical lifting is a crucial subject that needs to be structurally addressed for ensuring the safety of people and equipment. The Group Safety team site visits also revealed that there are serious skilling issues within our contractor community on this subject. Even our managers are not sufficiently groomed for effective planning for Mechanical Lifting at large Operations and Maintenance (O&M) and project sites.
Hence, Group Safety initiated a campaign -- UPKARAN -- on Mechanical Lifting to cover 20 Adani BU sites across 13 businesses as the final leg High Risk Campaigns covering 600+ employees. BUs further replicated the program at their other sites in subsequent phases as per their business and operational scenario. UPKARAN campaign is themed at “Lift Smart – Think, Then Start!” using 5L Model (Load, Lift, Limitation, Lifting Equipment and Lifting Operation) to develop / upskill capability of our managers /authorised lifting personals & other associates across Adani sites. The scope, content, creatives & publicity materials, lifting prototypes, AR/VR Modules, etc. have been custom developed for mass dissemination across Adani sites.
Each “L” in 5L Model further included 3L’s to cover 15L’s for deeper coverage of the subject with micro understanding. The objective of skilling sessions is to engrain the learnings of all 15L’s in the participants so that they will follow all 15L’s in right sequence while planning for Lifting and not miss out any of them.
People completing UPKARAN high level workshops were exposed to their responsibility to ensure proper rigging methods are used and that all variables which could result in a rigging failure are accounted for through adequate planning and selection of lifting gears. The workshop sessions enhanced participant’s skills in conducting pre-use inspections, engineering calculations in selection of slings and rigging gears, calculate sling tension in bridle slings, advanced techniques for working near overhead electrical power lines, ground conditions and load charts, statutory regulations and compliances, heavy lifting particularly in infrastructure sites, etc.
The participants were also involved in KSS approach (Keep doing, Start doing and Stop doing) to decide certain good practices which they should continue with, start few new practices which were not adopted earlier and stop certain unsafe practice / actions for enhancing lifting safety.
