Wild Encounters
From the African lion, elephant, rhino, African buffalo to leopard, cheetah and more, presenting the wild side of Africa through the lens of a youngster.
Poonam Advani
In the heart of Africa, where the savannas meet the horizon and the red sands whisper ancient secrets, a remarkable story of wildlife unfolds through the lens of an incredibly gifted 13-year-old photographer — Vani Adani.
The story begins with the break of dawn in Kruger National Park and Tswalu Kalahari Reserve, where the first light of day paints the land in hues of gold and orange. Early mornings, from 6:30 to 10:30 a.m., are when the magic happens. Each photograph, captured with a Canon EOS R7 and a 100mm-500mm telephoto lens, preserves moments of wonder that speak to the raw beauty of the African wilderness. Her inspiration to capture the essence of wildlife came from watching National Geographic. Traveling in June, her only concern wasn't fear of wild creatures but the worry that she might miss the perfect shot. Ms Adani’s guiding principle: don’t wait for the perfect moment—just keep clicking, and the magic will reveal itself.
The art of wildlife photography combines meticulous preparation with an intuitive understanding of the natural world. Before setting out, careful consideration is given to the right equipment, selecting lenses that match the vision for each shot. Moving closer to wildlife requires a delicate balance of stealth and efficiency, capturing the authentic behavior of animals with minimal disturbance. Multiple shots of each scene ensure a range of expressions and movements, increasing the chance of capturing the perfect moment. The selection process involves sifting through countless images to highlight the most compelling and representative moments of wildlife behavior, refining each photograph to tell a powerful story of the wild.
