from the chairman

“Our investments are manifestations of our belief in the future of India”

Chairman Gautam Adani addressed the 5th Annual Conference of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery Asia Pacific (SMISS AP) in Mumbai on 11 Jul 2025.

At the 5th Annual Conference of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery – Asia Pacific (SMISS-AP) in Mumbai, the atmosphere was charged with purpose. Among the many voices of expertise and innovation, it was Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, who offered a perspective that wove together medicine, technology and nation-building.

“When I was first invited to speak here, I hesitated. What could I — as a builder of enterprises — possibly offer to you, the healers of spines? But as I sat with that question, a deeper metaphor came to my mind. The spine you mend — is the ultimate architecture needed — for resilience of the human body. And just as you restore resilience to our bodies, leadership is about — restoring resilience — to organisations. So perhaps today, this shared metaphor — will remind us that — the spine is both a medical miracle — and a corporate necessity for self belief,” he said.

Mr Adani spoke of more than capital. He spoke of commitment—to India’s energy grids, to its logistics arteries, and to what he called the “industrial backbone” of the nation. These weren’t just sectors; they were lifelines, pulsing with potential.

“One point I would urge you to keep in mind — is that our investments — are manifestations of our belief — in the future of India. In her energy grids. In her logistics arteries. In her industrial backbone,” he reiterated, each phrase landing like a promise.

It is with this deep conviction, he shared, that the Adani Group is preparing to invest nearly USD 100 billion over the next five years—a scale and speed unmatched in the history of India’s private sector.

“The scale and pace of this commitment — is unprecedented in India’s private sector history,” he said, underscoring that this was not just about growth, but about resilience.

And then, drawing a powerful connection between the day’s theme and the nation’s trajectory, he added: “As we do our part for strengthening — the very spine of India’s rise.”

The metaphor was deliberate. Just as spine surgeons rebuild the structural core of the human body, Adani described the Group’s mission as fortifying the structural core of a nation on the move. “A spine that must be unbreakable. A spine that must carry 1.4 billion dreams. A spine that tells the world that — India’s rise is inevitable.”

In those few lines, business became belief. Investment became an identity. And the spine—whether of a body or a nation—became a symbol of strength, purpose and unstoppable progress.

The Chairman also revealed that he was deeply concerned about a silent epidemic gripping the nation—an epidemic that rarely makes headlines, yet affects millions every day. “I was shocked to learn that — low back pain is now — the leading cause of disability in India, ahead of conditions — like diabetes and heart disease,” he said, with a sense of urgency. This is not merely a health issue. It is a national crisis — measured not just in pain, but in lost productivity, mounting healthcare costs, and destroyed dreams.”

For Mr Adani, the solution goes beyond treatment rooms and operating theatres. It’s about imagination. Innovation. Collaboration between the medical and entrepreneurial communities to tackle a crisis that’s quietly eroding the nation’s potential.

“If we are to carry — the full weight of our national ambition, we must first heal — the spine of our people.” This, he emphasised, is not just a call for better medical care—it’s a call for bold thinking and transformative action. He urged the audience of surgeons, researchers and medical entrepreneurs to reimagine the future of spinal health in India.

The tone was not just hopeful—it was determined. Drawing from his own entrepreneurial journey, Adani stressed that what lies ahead is limited only by imagination and courage.

“As an entrepreneur, I can say that — the possibilities are endless — but we must have the belief — and the audacity — to pioneer this change.”

In those words, a call to action echoed through the room. The spine, once seen as just a structure of bones and nerves, had been reframed—as a metaphor for national strength. And healing it, Adani made clear, would require nothing short of a collective movement.

“And in return here is my promise: the Adani Group stands ready — to walk with you — and we have already embarked on our journey. Three years ago, on my 60th birthday, my family pledged INR 60,000 crore — towards healthcare, education and skill development. We did not enter healthcare — because it lacked momentum. We entered because — the momentum was not enough. The pace of change — was out of step — with the urgency of future demands. As the landscape unfolded, one truth stood out — healthcare does not need — incremental upgrades. It needs — a system-wide redesign,” he said, adding, “Not an evolution — but a revolution — rooted in intelligence — as well as empathy.

Mr Adani said he saw an opportunity not to compete within the existing system, but to reimagine it entirely — to build one that evolves with scientific progress, adapts to changing needs, and harnesses the full potential of AI, all while keeping the human being at the centre of it.

"We also believe that — academic training must evolve. So, our focus is on fostering doctors — who not only heal — but also lead with skills — in robotics, AI, systems thinking, and healthcare management. Their education — must go beyond anatomy — to include empathy, ethics, and enterprise. We also realize that — we cannot speak of transformation — without making stronger — the spine of the system — that comes from — our nursing and paramedical forces. Hence, we are also investing in building — top-tier training institutes — and establishing rigorous protocols — to ensure that quality becomes a habit, not an exception,” he shared.

In his closing remarks, Mr Adani emphasised the need to fundamentally rethink how healthcare is financed—shifting the focus from paperwork to people. He highlighted the importance of human-centric insurance solutions that empower families and serve as a foundation for a new, patient-first healthcare model.

“We are here — to build India’s healthcare for tomorrow — and a system that is integrated, intelligent, inclusive and inspired. And we will be delivering on this promise — through the Adani Healthcare Temples — that are 1,000-bed integrated campuses, that we will initiate — from Ahmedabad and Mumbai. These are designed to be — world-class, affordable, AI-first — healthcare ecosystems. And we are proud to have — the Mayo Clinic guiding us — on the design, implementation, and global standards — in medical infrastructure and research,” he said.
