In an age where sustainability is a necessity rather than a choice, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) is emerging as a leader in environmental responsibility. Through a range of impactful initiatives, the airport is significantly reducing carbon emissions and championing green alternatives.

A key component of its Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) framework is the complete transition to electric vehicles (EVs). By replacing all 17 diesel-powered vehicles with EVs, LGBIA is actively lowering its greenhouse gas emissions. To support this shift, the airport has installed two fast-charging EV stations on the landside, with two more under development on the airside—facilitating a seamless move toward electric mobility for all stakeholders.

Further reducing its carbon footprint, LGBIA has replaced 87 air-conditioning units using high Global Warming Potential (GWP-1760) R22 refrigerants with more sustainable models featuring lower GWP R32 refrigerants (GWP-677). This initiative alone is expected to achieve a 62% reduction (~143 tCO₂e) in emissions.

Safety measures have also undergone a green transformation—113 fire extinguishers of CO₂ type have been swapped for non-CO₂ alternatives, preventing unnecessary carbon dioxide emissions. Meanwhile, 100% of conventional lighting has been upgraded to LEDs, leading to an estimated carbon emission reduction of ~478 tonnes.

Harnessing renewable energy has become a top priority, with the installation of 300 kW capacity solar panels, generating clean energy for captive use. This step is projected to reduce GHG emissions by 95,798 kg of CO₂ annually.

Sustainable commuting has also been addressed with the introduction of four EV scooters for daily use at the Adani Office and CISF office, reducing reliance on four-wheelers. Additionally, all mechanical blowers have been replaced with EC blowers, achieving a remarkable 50% energy savings.

LGBIA’s initiatives align with the global push toward sustainable aviation and reinforce its commitment to a greener future. As the airport continues to innovate, these proactive changes stand as a beacon of inspiration for other organisations looking to integrate ESG principles into their operations.

With such forward-thinking strategies, LGBIA is not just meeting sustainability goals but exceeding them—proving that eco-conscious decisions today pave the way for a cleaner tomorrow.
