With discipline and determination, Smita Kumari, the in-house yoga instructor at the Adani Group, has set the Guinness World Records for both Bhunamanasana (Upavishta Konasana) and the Centre Split.

In a world where greatness is often measured by speed and strength, Smita Kumari has transformed the concept of success through her remarkable balance, flexibility, and unwavering determination. As a dedicated yoga instructor at the Adani Group, she has etched her name in history by attaining Guinness World Records for both Bhunamanasana (Upavishta Konasana) and the Centre Split.

Ms Kumari’s journey is not merely one of physical prowess; it embodies mental fortitude, unbridled passion, and the inspiring belief in one’s own potential. As we honour Women's Day, Ms Kumari stands as a powerful symbol of perseverance, motivating countless individuals to prioritise wellness and break through their self-imposed boundaries. Her story encourages us all to embrace our journeys and strive for extraordinary achievements.

The Journey to Mastery

Ms Kumari’s tryst with yoga began as childhood curiosity, evolving into a way of life that shaped her mind and body. Initially a student of martial arts, she aspired to join the Indian Economic Services. However, while awaiting her results, she discovered a deep passion for yoga. Encouraged by her growing love for the practice, she pursued a Diploma in Yoga Sciences and later completed a Master’s degree in the field.

She credits her teachers at Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga for shaping her journey. “Yoga is not just about flexibility; it’s about balance, both physically and mentally. Preparing for this record was as much a test of willpower as it was of skill,” she shares.

A Record-Breaking Feat

One day, while browsing online, Smita had a revelation, she wanted to see her name on Google, immortalised in history. This thought sparked her pursuit of a Guinness World Record.

In 2022, she set her first world record with the Centre Split pose, holding the position for 3 hours, 10 minutes and 12 seconds. However, she had already set her sights on Bhunamanasana (Upavishta Konasana), the chest-to-floor forward bend. Mastering this pose was no easy feat. While the split came naturally, holding Bhunamanasana required immense practice and discipline. For nearly 10 months, she dedicated at least three hours daily to refining her endurance, maintaining a strict diet, and adhering to a disciplined lifestyle.

Her dedication bore fruit on February 17, 2025, when she achieved her second world record, holding Bhunamanasana for 2 hours, 33 minutes, and 28 seconds. “I wanted to keep this date the same—it feels lucky for me,” she says with a triumphant smile.

Ms Kumari expresses deep gratitude to the Adani Health Care team for their enduring support and sponsorship in helping her achieve this monumental milestone.

She also shared that listening to mantras and chants while performing Bhunamanasana helped her divert her mind from the pain, allowing her to push her endurance beyond limits.

Strength Beyond the Mat

Beyond her world-record achievements, she balances her career at Adani with her passion for yoga. She believes that the discipline and mindfulness yoga brings have helped her excel in her professional life as well. Her colleagues admire her dedication and often turn to her for guidance on maintaining work-life balance and prioritising well-being.

“Adani has been incredibly supportive of my journey, and I’m grateful to be in an environment that values both personal and professional growth,” she acknowledges.

What’s Next?

With two world records to her name, Smita isn’t stopping anytime soon. She has already set her sights on breaking another record with a different asana. “I have a plan in mind—I’m working on it,” she hints.

Yoga in the Corporate World

Smita firmly believes that yoga is essential for professionals, particularly in high-pressure corporate environments. “Prevention is better than cure. Even if you have just 5-10 minutes, practicing breathing exercises can help immensely. For female employees especially, yoga is a must—it reduces stress and enhances overall well-being,” she emphasises.

Smita strongly encourages everyone to incorporate Suryanamaskar (Sun Salutation) into their daily routine, calling it the most dynamic form of yoga. “Suryanamaskar involves every body part—it’s a complete workout in itself. Just a few rounds each day can transform your flexibility, strength, and mental focus.”

She strongly advocates for consistency, discipline, and practice. “By not doing yoga, you’re inviting disorders into your body. In the long run, it will affect your posture and health.”

As we celebrate Women’s Day, Smita Kumari stands as a symbol of resilience and determination. Her journey proves that when women challenge norms and embrace their potential, they create history.
