Where Care Comes First

The Department of Nephrology at GAIMS recently completed 50,000 free dialysis cycles.

Dr Monali Jani

Gujarat Adani Institute of Medical Sciences (GAIMS) has set a new benchmark in kidney care, operating 24/7 for emergency dialysis being the only NABH-accredited dialysis centre in Bhuj.It is remarkable that this Dialysis Unit lightens the lives of more than 800 dialysis per month by providing them free of cost services under PMJAY scheme. With an unwavering commitment to patient welfare, the centre marks an important milestone of 50,000 free dialysis cycle, making quality kidney care accessible to all, especially underprivileged patients.

On this milestone, Dr Balaji Pillai, Director-Medical Services shares, “Reaching 50,000 free dialysis cycles is not just a number – it represents providing Quality life for thousands of families.”

What is Dialysis and Why is it Needed?

Dialysis is a life-saving procedure for individuals suffering from kidney failure. The kidneys play a crucial role in filtering waste, toxins, and excess fluids from the blood. Dialysis replaces the failed kidney’s function, preventing harmful substances from accumulating in the body. There are two primary types of dialysis:1. Haemodialysis – The patient’s blood is drawn, filtered through a specialised machine (dialyser), and returned to the body. This process, typically lasting 3-5 hours, is usually done multiple times a week.2. Peritoneal Dialysis – A cleansing fluid is introduced into the abdomen via a catheter, allowing waste removal through the body’s natural membrane. This can be done at home and provides more flexibility for patients.

Dr Harshal Vora, Consultant Nephrologist and Head, Department of Nephrology shares, “Dialysis is not just about filtering blood; it’s about restoring dignity and quality of life. At GAIMS, our round-the-clock service, expert team, and advanced therapies ensure that every patient receives the best possible care.”

Advanced Dialysis Services for Critical Patients

For critically ill patients, the centre offers slow dialysis, a gentler and more prolonged process that ensures better tolerance, especially for those in unstable conditions. Unlike standard dialysis which can be taxing on weak patients, slow dialysis provides a safer alternative, helping them recover without unnecessary strain on their body.

29-year-old Jamilaben from Mirzapar, Bhuj expresses her happiness on getting a new life recovering from Renel Failure due to SLE (Systemic lupus erythematosus – an autoimmune disease). “I was brought to GAIMS unconscious, struggling to breathe. The doctors found out that my kidneys had failed. I was on a ventilator, and there was little hope for my survival. But thanks to the urgent dialysis and quick treatment, I slowly started recovering. I came off the ventilator and, after some time, was discharged without any symptoms. Now, I no longer need dialysis. I am so grateful to the doctors and staff at GAIMS for giving me a second chance at life," she says.

Specialised Plasma Exchange and IVIG Therapy

The GAIMS Dialysis Centre is equipped with plasma exchange therapy, a vital treatment for patients with autoimmune disorders, severe infections, or neurological conditions. Additionally, Intravenous Immunoglobulin (IVIG) therapy is available for immunocompromised patients, offering essential antibody support to help fight infections and improve overall immunity.
