Hope Rises On Pulicat’s Shores

In Pulicat, where land and sea meet in quiet harmony, a silent transformation is underway. Guided by the Adani Foundation, this coastal community is embracing sustainable farming, clean energy, and improved healthcare — proving that true progress begins at the grassroots.

Glory Dwarkesh

In the serene fishing hamlets of Pulicat, Tamil Nadu, change is gently weaving through the rhythm of daily life. Here, over 17,000 residents — farmers, fishermen and families — are witnessing how thoughtful, community-led initiatives can turn challenges into opportunities and empower people to build a more secure and sustainable future.

At the heart of this transformation is the Adani Foundation, whose sustained efforts are helping the people of Pulicat nurture resilience and self-reliance. Every intervention — from solar lights to organic farming and improved healthcare — is rooted in one purpose: to uplift lives while protecting the natural environment that sustains them.

Sowing Seeds of Sustainability

Agriculture in coastal regions often faces the double burden of salinity and declining soil fertility. Recognising this, the Foundation relaunched its Organic Farming – PGS Organic Scope Certification Programme, helping over 500 farmers transition to chemical-free practices.

Through hands-on training, certification support and access to organic markets, these farmers are now reaping benefits that go beyond yield. Their lands are recovering health, their produce is residue-free and their communities are rediscovering pride in traditional, sustainable farming.

Arul, a farmer from Oornambedu, shared with quiet satisfaction, “With the support of the Adani Foundation, I am proudly practicing organic farming. My soil is healthier, and I know that what we grow is good for the people who eat it.”

Lighting Lives, Ensuring Safety

For Pulicat’s fishing families, evenings once meant working in dim or no light, with boat parking areas shrouded in darkness and uncertainty. Responding to this long-standing concern, the Foundation installed 33 solar-powered streetlights and 20 high-mast solar lights in key fishing zones.

The result is a safer, brighter shoreline. Over 5,000 families now move confidently even after dusk, assured that their boats and nets are protected. As fisherman M. Babu from Lighthouse Kuppam expressed, “Earlier, our biggest worry was theft and accidents after sunset. Now, with the solar lights, we feel secure and can focus on our work.”

Delivering Care, Saving Time

In emergencies, every minute counts — especially in remote fishing villages where medical help can be miles away. Understanding this urgency, the Adani Foundation has introduced two mini ambulances to improve healthcare access for nearly 5,000 families in the region.

The initiative has already begun saving crucial time in emergencies, offering residents the assurance of timely care. As fisherman J. Sagayaraj shared, “These ambulances bring us closer to life-saving treatment. For our community, it’s a real blessing.”

Empowering Communities, Enriching Futures

From fields to shorelines, the Adani Foundation’s work in Pulicat is a testament to its belief that development must be inclusive, holistic, and sustainable. Each project is designed to build capacity, restore balance, and strengthen community ownership — ensuring that the benefits of progress endure long after the interventions begin.

As the sun rises over Pulicat’s tranquil backwaters, its glow reflects more than light on the waves — it mirrors a new sense of confidence and hope. Here, empowered by knowledge and guided by care, a community once on the margins is charting its own course toward a brighter, more sustainable tomorrow.
