What if the voice you hear on your favourite radio show was powered not by electricity from the grid, but by the sun itself?
That’s exactly what happened this August when Adani Group, along with Mirchi and BIG FM, set up the world’s first solar-powered live radio studios, a breakthrough that combined entertainment, technology and sustainability in the most unexpected way.
A Studio Under the Sun
It began in Ahmedabad on 8 Aug 2025, where Mirchi unveiled a pop-up studio at Gurudwara Crossroads, Thaltej. But this wasn’t just another radio broadcast. Every mic, every console, every light was powered by solar panels arranged by Adani’s distributors. The rainy season posed a challenge, the team kept one eye on the skies and another on the forecast, but when the day finally came, the studio buzzed with sunshine-powered energy.
Mirchi’s much-loved RJ Krutarth and RJ Urvi kept the crowd engaged with trivia, solar stories and light-hearted banter. Passersby stopped to watch, curious and amazed at how the sun was literally running a radio show. A few days later, the studio shifted to Mumbai’s BMC Selfie Point, where the city’s favourite RJ Jeeturaj added his trademark humor and energy to the solar-powered celebration.
A Nationwide Movement with BIG FM
If Mirchi lit the spark, BIG FM fanned the flames into a nationwide movement with its campaign, “Story of Suraj.” Spanning 39 cities, the initiative brought solar energy into living rooms, phones and hearts across India.
Listeners tuned in to a dual-city solar-powered broadcast from Delhi and Pune, a world-first achievement that earned a place in both the Asia Book of Records and the India Book of Records. Meanwhile, on-ground activations in Delhi, Pune, Modhera, Indore and Lucknow featured solar stalls, music, pledge walls and real stories of people whose lives had been changed by clean energy.
Perhaps the most symbolic moment came from Modhera, India’s first fully solar-powered village. When BIG FM went live from its Gram Panchayat, it wasn’t just radio — it was a glimpse of India’s future, where communities thrive on renewable power.
Beyond Entertainment — A Green Promise
For listeners, these shows weren’t just about music or talk. They were about possibility. Solar wasn’t something abstract or distant — it was right there, powering the voices they laughed with and trusted.
The campaigns reached massive numbers, Mirchi’s solar initiative alone touched 2.5 million+ viewers digitally and inspired 100+ solar stories from listeners, while BIG FM reached 2.91 crore people on radio and 21 million on digital platforms.
Voices of Leadership
“The ‘Story of Suraj’ campaign is a testament to how creativity can drive meaningful change. From creating the world’s first dual-city solar-powered broadcast to earning recognition in the Asia Book of Records and India Book of Records, the campaign set new benchmarks in purpose-driven innovation. These milestones prove that when purpose meets innovation, the impact can extend far beyond the airwaves,” said Sunil Kumaran, CEO, BIG FM.
Adani leaders and Mirchi echoed the same thought: this wasn’t just a campaign, but a bold demonstration of “Hum Karke Dikhate Hain”, turning an ambitious idea into reality and showing the world how renewable energy can fuel everything, even entertainment.
Why This Matters
For Adani employees and communities alike, the solar-powered radio studio is more than a fun, first-ever achievement. It is proof that sustainability can be woven into the most unexpected corners of our lives. If radio can run on sunshine, why not more? Hospitals, schools, homes — even entire villages like Modhera — can shine brighter with clean energy.
And that’s the story Adani, Mirchi, and BIG FM set out to tell: the sun isn’t just above us
— it’s powering us forward.
