Defence Reinvented

Triggering Self-Reliance

Adani Defence & Aerospace is advancing India’s defence self-reliance with the induction of DARA, the nation’s first AI-powered assault rifle, into paramilitary forces.

In a country striving for strategic autonomy, few sectors carry the weight of national aspiration like defence manufacturing. In recent years, the private sector has stepped up in unprecedented ways to support the vision of “Aatmanirbhar Bharat”—a self-reliant India. One of the most striking examples of this new defence industrial momentum is Adani Defence & Aerospace, whose recent technological milestone—the AI-enabled DARA rifle—signals a leap forward in how India equips its forces.

Developed at the Adani Small Arms Complex in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, this rifle is more than just another firearm. It is India’s first assault rifle equipped with artificial intelligence, combining Israeli design heritage with indigenous innovation. Its induction into a leading paramilitary force isn’t just a product rollout—it’s a paradigm shift. It underscores the confidence our national forces now place in homegrown private-sector capability and the emergence of smart military systems that value precision over volume.

DARA: Smart Firepower, Smarter Strategy

What sets the DARA small arm apart isn’t just its design, but its intelligence. The AI-powered fire control system introduces microsecond-level delays between bullets, ensuring the first round hits its mark before the second is released. This intelligent timing increases hit probability, reduces recoil distortion, and conserves ammunition—critical in both high-altitude insurgency zones and urban close-quarter combat.

This goes beyond mere efficiency. In real combat conditions, accuracy isn’t just a tactical advantage—it is a humane one. Precision fire reduces collateral damage and unnecessary loss, supporting strategic objectives while also reflecting a more measured and responsible approach to armed engagements.

DARA’s smart system reflects the broader direction of modern warfare: data-enabled, soldier-centric, and mission-adaptive. It turns the weapon into an intelligent companion, not just a tool—heralding a shift in how India prepares for asymmetric threats and complex security environments.

From Import Dependency to Indigenous Depth

For decades, India’s defence preparedness was stymied by overdependence on imports—leading to vulnerabilities in supply chains, delays in delivery, and a mismatch between imported systems and Indian conditions. The DARA’s success underscores how “Make in India” is transitioning from slogan to substance.

Adani Defence’s investments in small arms, UAVs, aerospace systems and radars are creating one of India’s most vertically integrated defence ecosystems. The firm’s strategy—global technology partnerships combined with local value addition—has helped indigenise core capabilities. The Adani Ammunition Complex in Kanpur, for instance, can meet up to 25 per cent of India’s annual ammunition requirements—serving domestic forces as a priority. The complex, one of the largest integrated ammunition manufacturing facilities in South Asia, prioritises supplying Indian forces, including defence, paramilitary and police.

R&D, Responsibility and the Road Ahead

India’s Defence Acquisition Procedure (DAP) 2020 has paved the way for greater innovation and public-private synergy. Adani Defence’s focus on indigenous R&D and digital technology is anchoring a larger shift—from buyer to builder, from assembler to designer.

This evolution also supports a less discussed, but vital, benefit: ethical force projection. Smarter, AI-driven systems like DARA allow our forces to operate with better intelligence, higher efficiency, and greater discretion—minimising unwanted loss and enabling more surgical decision-making in combat. That’s as much a technological leap as it is a civilisational one.

India’s ambition to be among the top five global defence exporters by 2047 will require scale, speed, and sustained innovation. Adani Defence’s emergence as a key player—grounded in IP creation, indigenous manufacturing, and agile deployment—strengthens India’s claim as a credible, responsible military technology leader.

Aatmanirbhar Bharat on the Frontlines

The integration of DARA firearm into the Indian defence ecosystem is not just about arming forces—it’s about arming them intelligently. It symbolises a maturing defence ecosystem where AI and advanced R&D serve not only tactical goals but also strategic clarity, operational precision, and ethical responsibility.

As we look ahead to a future shaped by hybrid warfare, rapid escalation, and technology-first conflict theatres, India’s ability to build, adapt and deploy its own defence solutions will be the ultimate force multiplier.
