For more than a century, Chinchpokli Chintamani has been woven into the cultural fabric of Mumbai. As the city welcomed Bappa once again, the historic Chinchpokli Sarvajanik Utsav Mandal brought together faith, artistry, community and a cherished legacy.

Founded in 1920 in Mumbai’s historic textile heartland, the mandal is the city’s second-oldest public Ganapati celebration and is now in its 107th year. Rooted in the spirit of Girangaon, Chintamani has remained a cultural anchor through generations of change, drawing devotees from across Mumbai and beyond.

The celebrations trace their wider roots to the public Ganeshotsav movement pioneered by Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak in the 1890s, which transformed Ganesh Chaturthi from a household ritual into a vibrant public festival. Since 1939, Chinchpokli’s celebrations have been held beside the eastern side of Chinchpokli railway station.

This year, devotion took an especially grand form. Inspired by the splendour of South Indian temple architecture, the elaborate pandal recreated elements of the Sri Venkateswara Temple at Swarnagiri in Hyderabad and Bhuvanagiri. Towering gopurams, sacred deepastambhas and sculpted yali/vyala guardian figures created an immersive setting for devotees.

At the heart of the celebration is Chintamani, adorned in the likeness of Lord Venkateshwara Balaji of Tirumala Tirupati. Traditional motifs including the Garuda, Keertimukh, Shankha and Chakra, along with a camphor tilak, added to the idol’s spiritual grandeur.

Yet Chinchpokli’s legacy extends beyond the festivities. With nearly 5,000 contributors, the mandal has supported communities through healthcare, education, blood donation drives and assistance during the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year’s celebrations have brought together a shared spirit of community and celebration as Mumbai comes together to welcome Chinchpokli Cha Chintamani.
