Sri Lanka: An Island Of Many Moods

From elephants and ancient temples to misty mountains, the thick wilderness and the warm shores of Mirissa, Sri Lanka is less a destination than a journey through many worlds.
Some destinations give you exactly what you expect. Sri Lanka gives you something more. It begins with the familiar image of a tropical island—coconut trees, warm sunshine and beaches and slowly reveals a country of ancient temples, dense forests, misty mountains and surprisingly cool highlands. What makes it special is not simply the variety, but the way the landscape keeps changing, almost without warning.
ELEPHANT PARK VILLAGE, RAMBUKKANA
In Rambukkana, the island introduces itself through its elephants. At the Elephant Park Village, one would be humbled by being so close to them - their gentleness despite their awe-inspiring size.
ROCK-CUT CAVE TEMPLE, DAMBULLA
Further inland at Dambulla, centuries of unwavering faith are carved directly into the earth. Inside the cool, silent chambers of the rock-cut Cave Temple, Buddha statues sit in timeless meditation beneath ceilings blanketed in intricate, age-softened murals.
The Golden Temple nearby adds another striking layer to the landscape. Across Sri Lanka, history does not feel locked away in museums; it remains woven into everyday life.
THE LION ROCK, SIGIRIYA
Rising above forests, the Lion Rock in Sigiriya is a good trek leading to the summit that offers a breathtaking, 360-degree panorama where the sky meets endless forests, and you are left with nothing but the sheer scale of the island’s beauty lying quietly at your feet.
THE WILD AND ITS INHABITANTS, SIGIRIYA
As dusk descends, the island undergoes a captivating transformation. Its dense landscape, teeming with a rich variety of wildlife—including the loris, wild elephant, civet, wild fox, owl, and bat—offers an unparalleled thrill for the adventurous at heart.
RELICS OF BUDDHA, KANDY
The city of Kandy offers a distinct sense of tranquility. Within the hallowed grounds of the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one is enveloped by a profound and unparalleled quietness.
“A SLICE OF ENGLAND” NUWARA ELIYA
A surprising highlight of the journey is Nuwara Eliya, dubbed “Little England”. At 1,890 metres above sea level, the tropical island vanishes, replaced by misty green hills, sprawling tea plantations, and crisp air that calls for a jacket. The town’s colonial past endures in its red-brick buildings and Tudor-style houses, while the serene Lake Gregory solidifies the feeling of being in a world far removed from the familiar tropics.
RAMAYANA TRAIL/NINE ARCH BRIDGE, ELLA
Ella draws tourists from world over for weaving the famed epic Ramayana into the landscape. The Hanuman and Sri Ramajayam Temples and a footprint believed to belong to Lord Hanuman offer pilgrims a sight to revere.
At Nine Arch Bridge, lush hills form a natural frame around the historic railway bridge. Ella has a charm that does not demand a hurried itinerary.
TROPICAL BEACH, MIRISSA
At Mirissa, Sri Lanka steps back into its tropical self—sunshine, palms, sand and the Indian Ocean stretching towards the horizon. After the caves, temples, jungle and misty hills, the coast feels almost like another chapter of the same country.
FORT/LIGHTHOUSE, GALLE
The sense of history continues along the coast at Galle Fort, where old ramparts meet the sea and the Galle Lighthouse watches over the shoreline. Colonial-era buildings now house cafés, shops and restaurants, giving the fort an unusual character: history is present, but it is alive and being lived in.
LOTUS TOWER, COLOMBO
By the time Colombo comes into view, the journey feels less like a collection of places and more like one long, unfolding story. From the Lotus Tower, the city offers a final perspective, but the real view lies in the memories gathered along the way.
COCONUTS AND MORE
Sri Lanka, however, captivates tourists with its food. A wonderfully comforting blend of the island's flavors comes together in dishes like idiyappam, local curries, and coconut sambols. This culinary experience is perfectly complemented by fruits such as the rambutan, which, though unusual on the outside, is delightfully sweet within.
Sri Lanka transforms in totally with time and weather, bringing in unparallel hues that make each of its distinct landscapes picturesque. Perhaps that is what makes Sri Lanka so difficult to forget.
