International Girl Child Day: Ambuja Cements Strengthens Saloni’s Transition from Slums to Rugby Stardom

Ahmedabad

11 October 2023

As we celebrate International Girl Child Day 2023, Ambuja Cements, the cement and building material company of the diversified Adani Group, takes pride in sponsoring Saloni as she embarks on a remarkable journey to become a rising star in the world of rugby. Hailing from a humble background in Uttarakhand, Saloni has earned her well-deserved silver ‘medal’ at the 18th Asian Rugby 7 tournament in Taiwan, a testament to her extra ordinary talent and dedication.

Ambuja Cements under its CSR initiative provided Saloni with financial assistance, invaluable guidance and dedicated mentorship to help her pursue her dreams relentlessly. The sports girl's journey, which began in the slum area of Sonali Park in Roorkee, culminated in a triumphant moment when she won the silver medal in Taiwan, bringing immense pride and glory to her hometown in Uttarakhand. Her trail of glory began with a trial in Odisha, where her exceptional skills caught the attention of national team selectors, who recognised her potential and selected her to represent India.

Saloni played a vital role as a part of the Indian girls' rugby team that participated in the 18th Asian Rugby 7 tournament in Taiwan. Representing India as part of the Indian girls' rugby team, Saloni's dedication, perseverance, and talent shone brightly and led the team on a path to glory with the remarkable achievement of the silver medal.

Saloni, a resident of a makeshift hut near the Ganga canal in the vicinity of Sonali Park in Roorkee, hails from a financially-disadvantaged family. Her father, Karan Singh, makes a living as a rickshaw puller, while her mother, Sudesh, manages the household. The Uttarakhand Rugby Association, under the visionary leadership of Ayush Saini (President) and Suryakant Saini (Chairman), played a pivotal role in nurturing Saloni's talent. Ambuja Cements’ patronage played a significant role in her journey by providing her with the necessary financial assistance.

Ambuja Cements remains committed to empowering individuals and communities through sports and education initiatives. It is also dedicated to fostering talent, enabling dreams, and making a positive impact on society.
